Married ladies, some comments on the RD?

Do you remember much about it? Was it important? Or is it sort of an after thought, and your memories are mostly about the wedding and such?

Re: Married ladies, some comments on the RD?

  • I loved my RD.  It was nice to get both sides of the BP together and thank everyone.

  • Ours was tiny, simple, and low key.

Bridal party and significant others only, and parents and grandparents.

We had dinner at my parent's house and my mom ordered food from a local restaurant.  It was perfect.
  • Ours was also simple and low key.  My mom had a backyard BBQ at her house and all our out of town guests + family came.  There was food, good beers and lots of fun.  I loved it.

  • Yes.. we had an open house for all the guests (it was a semi-DW).  We had about 100+ people there, it was fun and it was nice to be able to get 2 nights with our guests instead of just one.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • My rehearsal dinner was at a country club and much nicer than my wedding. It was also an opportunity to watch almost 2hrs of a photo slideshow of FI, look at a table of photos of FI growing up, and hear speeches from FI's father whenever the need hit him. I was mentioned once?

They were just ticked that we opted not to have our reception or ceremony at their club, so they got their digs in when/where they could. Not that I gave a rat's ass. I was getting married the next day. They could have done anything that night and I wouldn't have cared. :)

Holy crap, Bec! I don't think I remember knowing this information.  How obnoxious!
  • It was fine. I just smiled and tolerated.

He started his speech reminiscing about his other two daughers' grand weddings with receptions held right in that very hall. J and I were dying trying not to laugh. It was fairly true though, what they say about people doing offesive things at your wedding. No one blamed me or J. :)
  • Well I'm glad you and your hubby were on the same page. FI and I aren't. He's totally down and does realize why I'm upset or why I think it's inappropriate.

I feel like his family is trying to get their digs in because I wanted to have our wedding in California, where I'm from. Not in South Carolina where he's from. Plus we currently live in Nevada. I wasn't planning a freaking wedding across the country. My FMIL and FSIL would've had to plan the whole thing and we don't have the same ideas, that's for sure.

  • I loved our RD.  We paid for it alone, so we got to do it exactly how we wanted.  It was about 30 people in a private space at our favorite restaurant.  We got to hang out with our WP and some of our family that we don't get to see much.  It was nice to have a separate event where we could spend time with our inner circle.  At the actual wedding, we were pulled in 100 directions all the time and didn't get to spend as much time with anyone.
  • Ours was incredibly informal. It was us, the BP, their S/Os, and the parents that raised us (Our siblings were all involved in the ceremony somehow). We did a run through at our venue and then all went to the Five Guys down the street (We actually took a vote at the "rehearsal" on where everybody wanted to go-yes, we were that lax about it).

To me, the RD wasn't that important ... I mean, I had a blast that night, but that's just because we run with a fun crowd, but we didn't do speeches or make a big fuss over stuff ... we figured that's what the wedding was for!

If you fire a WP member, you're against America.

  • Our RD was amazing.  I think I had more fun at that then the reception to be honest.  We had two long tables: us, bridal party and their dates at one, and then parents and others at the other table.  We ate, drank, and laughed all evening.  It was great!

  • Well, first of all, the rehearsal is a surprisingly emotional time.  It hits you that this whole WEDDING thing is now very real, it's HAPPENING tomorrow, and everyone there has unplugged from their own lives to plug into yours for just this one special weekend of time.  Then your officiant goes over the ceremony, and you are trying hard to concentrate on everything so you know where to walk, when to walk, when to wait, listening for instruction and music cues, etc.  It's an overwhelming time.  No one tells anyone that beforehand, so most people walk into this and are totally blindsided with how totally overwhelming the rehearsal is.

Then you go to the dinner, finally breathing again, feeling the embracing love from your very closest friends and family who have gathered together this one time FOR YOU.  Still overwhelming.

And this is the only thing that the groom's parents get to host in the entire weekend of bride's-family-hosted-events.  Usually the groom's parents take this VERY VERY seriously.  In my region of the country, the groom's parents take off a long weekend and fly to the wedding location to visit possible RD locations, do tastings and visits and evaluate possible contracts, then choose an RD location, and finalize all the contracting details, etc.  Then when the groom's mother flies up for the showers and pre-wedding parties, she stops by the RD location in person to warm up her connections there.  In my region, the groom's mother flies up for the RD venue weekend, and probably three to five more times to attend engagement parties, showers, etc.  So when the RD dinner time arrives, the groom's parents are just about ready to pop, and they host the RD with great fanfare.
