What is your mom wearing?

I've found my gown- but my mom is another story. We're having trouble finding the right full-length dress that isn't too old looking (she's 47) or made for a woman 50lbs overweight and that's still in our budget ($200). Is/did your mom wear a MOB, BM, or a special occassion gown?

This is the only one so far that she's liked:

My Mom wore a MOB dress and looked stunning imo.  But it is definitely very MOB...but still young and stylish I think.

It has black on the outer edges, it's not brown like it looks in pics.

it's also around your budget and very figure flattering ;)

Another suggestion...look at bridesmaid dresses. There are some that are definitely MOB appropriate....and they'll be MUCH cheaper than a MOB dress.

My mom's wearing something she found on sale at Macy's. She had no interest in the MOB ballgowns so this is much better for her and her personal style. She paid well under $200 for it. So maybe look in some department stores and see what you can find.

My mom wanted to not look "too old" either with her dress.  But the designer she chose, which is very flattering to slighty heavy women, is out of your price range.  Her dress cost $500 -- though maybe somewhere like Pearl's place can get it at a discount and therefore more affordable.

Her dress isn't on the site, but this is the link to the designer she chose.

My mom is also overweight and had a really hard time finding a dress.  A lot of the plus size dresses in department stores are very frumpy. She ended up spending more than she wanted to unfortunately (I think around $650).  But, she's also super fussy.  I saw some nice plus-size dresses on-line but they weren't good enough for her.

I saw some nice ones on Nordstroms.com.  Also, before she found her dress we were planning to look at RK Bridal since I heard they have a decent selection of plus size.  I don't know why more stores don't carry larger sizes, its pretty ridiculous.  FWIW, here's the style she ended up with, which she says is flattering on her.

both my mom and FI's mom got dresses at Lord & Taylor, in that price range I believe.

FI's mom has like the perfect figure and is wearing this to-die-for deep purple, one-shoulder, Oscar worhy dress. She looks amazing =)

My mom is wearing something more traditional: Long navy gown with a sheer jacket and belt-like embelishments under the bust. She looks great. She recently lost like 50 pounds, and I'm so happy for her to show it off ;-)

my mom had tried looking in department stores too for a mob dress, and didn't find anything she liked....everything seemed to be like a sack with a jacket (in the plus size section)....so she ended up spending more than she had wanted (i think $450?  and a little more b/c it needed to be rushed...) so i don't it helps your situation any...but...i can tell you this, my mom spent too much time looking for something and not going to the normal salon type stores to buy one, that she had to pay for it to be rushed at 6 weeks out....so....just sayin
i think she was being picky though, because she wanted a jacket, but not a bolero and it had to have a collar and it had to be this and that...
this is what she ended up wearing....and i think she looked the best out of all of us!

(this is the best picture i cound find...the designer is cameron blake, which seems to have a lot of bigger sizes....and there's a bit of a sweep train on the dress too)

Neither my mom nor FMIL have gotten their dresses yet... but both plan on looking in department stores as well. My BFF's mother bought her's at Macy's the week before BFF's wedding (!!!) and it was gorgeous, by the designer Adrianna Papell. You can definitely get something gorgeous and affordable in a dept. store.

Thanks again girls! Part of the problem is that my mom isn't a plus size- but she isn't a size 2 either- and so many MOB gowns are catered towards plus sizes.

kpeteley I love the gown your mom is wearing!

smw - Thank you! It's an Alexia Gown.  It really looks awesome in person.  My MOH wanted it to be the BM dresses after she saw it but it's very MOH appropriate too and my mom feels beautiful - She is a 6-8 size, but I tried it on (I am bigger than that :) and it still was Very flattering.

I am surprised this dress was flattering.  From the pictures, it looks like it would be extremely unflattering on anyone who wasn't a model.

My mother wore a dress she already owned (wore once to a wedding where none of our guests saw it)and we tweaked it a little.  It was a full length gown with a slit in the back.  To make it a little younger, we shortened it and made it a corset back to match my niece (MOH) and my dress.

I've heard Nordstroms, especially online, has some really nice dresses.

We are going to the store this weekend, but found a number of nice dresses online - offering free shipping over $200 and you can return to the store.
