Re: My boss is funny

  • haha, I'd would love to sit down with a client and tell them that they should set up an Roth/Annuity/whatever because "it's theshit".  No other explanation needed.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: My boss is funny : The job is certainly interesting. I don't lobby at all, except that my job is directly related to discovering and drilling for natural gas and using it as an alternative source. And just by way of the job, yes, I've become a much bigger advocate of natural gas, as opposed to oil. Although, drilling in the Gulf is a giant portion of Louisiana's economy and I shudder to think what's going to happen if the moratorium isn't lifted soon.

Word.  It's definitely going to be a whole different ballpark once things get settled down there and new regulations are passed through.
I feel terrible for the communities and families who for generations have lived off of the fishing industry too.

Yeah, the whole thing is just unbelievably sad. That said, I don't think it's fair in the slightest to put people who work in the oil industry out of a job because one company fucked up. Just because BP can't handle their stuff properly doesn't mean no one is capable of drilling safely. It's adding insult to injury, to me.

LC- Your raise kicks my little raise's booty.  I was excited with a 6 cent raise.  I would die if I got a $5 an hour raise.  Alas I work at a public high school and thus it would take me until a year out from retirement to receive that big of a raise.  Yay for you!
  • If I got a $5 an hour raise, I would complain about my job significantly less.

Right, I agree.  There are certainly safe and efficient methods of drilling.  I don't know enough about the regulations that they are planning for the industry as a whole to comment on whether or not they are unfair but I do think that alittle bit more oversight can't be a bad thing.
As far as I am concerned, as long as any company in any industry is doing their thing legally and ethically they shouldn't worry about whether or not they will be more closely monitored.  It's people who start cutting corners in order to cut costs that trigger a desire not to be regulated.  The same can be said for the financial industry and that's where I make my living.

Yup, I totally agree. It's not the prospect of more oversight that bothers me. It's the fact that the industry is at a standstill right now and it's screwing a lot of people over. As far as I'm concerned, the government can regulate whatever they want to, as long as it doesn't interfere detrimentally with citizens' lives. The moratorium is interfering detrimentally.

And from what I understand about Deepwater Horizon, there were like 5 or 6 indicators that the rig wasn't working properly. Whoever was in charge of the rig ignored all of these indicators because apparently, he was under a ton of pressure from his bosses at BP to get more production out of the rig in a shorter amount of time. That's what I've heard from industry people anyway. I don't think that's the case with all oil companies who have rigs in the Gulf though.

  • Right, I've heard the same about Deepwater and I agree that it's unfortunate that an incident like this is impacting so many people's livelihoods.  Like you said, just because one company made a mistake does not mean every company is like that.
So take that raise and go fix the energy industry's problems! You sound like you have it together at least!
  • Haha, I'm far from being able to fix the problems, but you gotta start somewhere, I guess. Thanks!

[QUOTE]LC-thats awesome. I've heard my company is not doing good due to the aconomy so I dont want to ask for a raise eventhough I didn't get a raise when I hit my 3 year mark like I did when I hit 1 and 2 years. Thats ok after the wedding in september I am going to start looking for a new job.

Sarah - don't make me snort.  It makes my throat hurt.

Heels - J's boss, when he comes in for their annual reviews, J (I assume the other guys do it too; but some might do it without trying) "throw him a bone" by making a simple mistake on a PM (regular truck maintenance). So, the boss gets to point out something J did incorrectly, like not writing down the mileage before he brings it into the bay, or something like that. He doesn't get written up, but it makes the boss  happy and sort of keeps him off J's shoulder. Plus, he knows J's a kickass wrench who could probably keep all the truck running if there was someone else to do the paperwork. He sucks at that.

    PS - LC - Congrats!!!
