Song Suggestions

Hi everyone- This is my first post on this board but I am a long time lurker :-)

My FI and I met with our priest earlier this week and he said we should pick a hymn for after the Nuptial Blessing that affirms our vows.  Does anyone have any suggestions?

TIA!

Re: Song Suggestions

  • This link (click) has some of the music other brides have done, but I'm not sure if any of them meet what you're looking for.

A lot of girls on here are musicians for their parish so hopefully someone will chime in.

  • It sounds like your priest is telling you to do this? FYI, it's not a part of the Rite of Marriage, so if you're not excited about picking another song, then feel free to just tell your priest you would rather not. (If he insists, then ask him to show you where in the Rite it even gives this as an option.)

  • I find it odd it comes after the nuptial blessing. Are you sure it isn't after the vows?

Either way, its an awkward place for a song. Especially because after the vows, there are intercessions and the offertory song (if its a mass).

For Life by Michael John Poirier  or Covenant Hymn (I think David Haas)
  • No, we're not having a full mass because a lot of my FI's side of the family isn't Catholic. The priest definitely made it sound like we had to do it and even hand wrote it in on our outline he gave us to fill out for the ceremony. I also have never heard of it and I really have no idea what would be appropriate.

<div>Here's the order without a Mass!  It looks like the Blessing and Exchange of Rings immediately follows the vows, so the only reason I can think of that he'd have you select a song is if he assumed that you would be doing a unity candle... but typically that is after the Our Father.</div><div>

</div><div>No, unity candle usually happens after the vows/rings.</div><div>

  • Unity candle happens wherever anyone wants it to happen, SINCE (like this song the poster is asking abour,) it is not part of any official rubrics for a Catholic wedding. (So, depending on how you look at it, anywhere you put it can be completely right or completely wrong...)

  • If you do indeed desire a song at that point, I'd select something that speaks to the character of the Sacrament, such as "Servant Song" (or there's also "The Servant Song") or "We Are Many Parts."  We used both in selections in our Prelude.
"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!" (Isaiah 43:1)
  • Thanks, ladies!
