Does your dog do this? (pointless post)

Presuming that you let it on your sofa, does your dog just sit on the sofa and lick it? All four of mine do it. If I leave the room, I come back to a big, wet licked spot where I was sitting. I cannot figure out what's so tasty about the sofa.

  • Eeeeeeeeeeeeeuw. Your dog likes bums.

  • My parent's dog that passed away used to.  I think it might mean something medically, so you might want to ask the vet.
  • Are they perhaps licking their paws and not the sofa?  One of my dogs licks his paws on the sofa and leaves the circley wet spots.  My other dog just licks the sofa.  Either way, my answer is yes.

  • Fair enough Tide. I can get why they'd lick the spot where I was sitting, but sometimes, they just do it wherever they happen to be sitting.

  • What sort of material is your couch?

If all four of them do it, I doubt it has something to do with medical reasons.

  • My sister's dog does this.  It's a white leather chair, she's the only who sits there ever, and she licks the hell out of the arms.
  • Incessant licking is generally considered a stress behavior (if it's not just in one spot).  Do they have enough toys?

  • Salt, one sofa is microfiber and the other is cotton, I think, but I don't know because I got it at Salvation Army.

  • My dogs don't do that but sometimes they drag their butts across the carpet (which I know why they do it but it's still gross).

Usually she's licking herself and that's why there is a wet spot.

Although she does like to lick my butt when I'm getting dressed, especially after going to the gym with the salty sweat. (I don't let her, but sometimes she is just there when I get out of the shower, and I have to run away)

It's not incessant, exactly. They do it frequently, but not all day every day. But to answer your question, there are 8 or so toys scattered about. So that's like 2 per dog. I think that's enough, but I might be wrong.

  • My dog licks her collar - she has two now because someone took her old, dirty one off and we couldn't find it. Once we found it, I was trying to tighten it but had the hardest time with her up in my lap to lick it. I thought it was just that collar but she did the same with the one she had on for less than 48 hours.

  • My mom's cats lick her microfiber sofa.  I don't think she has the dog up there with her much (he's a Golden and between my mom and the cats there's not much room left) so I don't know about him.

  • My dog will lick anything too. I've seen him occasionally lick the couch, but he's usually licking his paw or chewing on a toy that will result in a wet spot. We keep a slip cover on the couch to protect it from his hair and toys and stuff, so there could be something on there from his rawhide that is tasty or something.

My dog will also just lick lick lick my hand or arm or something. I don't know what tastes so good about it! It usually doesn't bother me unless he's doing it when I'm trying to go to bed. Then I have to hide under the covers from him. :-P
  • My dog licks everything.  The wall, the couch, clothing.  It's like he smells it and then wants to see what it tastes like, because usually it's just one lick and then he stops, but will taste it again 5 minutes later.  He's weird.

Definitely.  She has a field day when we come home from the gym.

My dog doesn't necessarily like things that smell good to her, she just rubs herself on them.  Especially our towels or cedar smelling clothes.
  • Our couch is microfiber and Barker licks it all the time. Where there's butts, where there's not butts, it doesn't matter to him. I remember back when I was single and my couch was pristine. Now it looks like it belongs in a frat house.
  • My dog doesn't, but I don't think it's super weird.  He's a licker, but mainly of people :)

He doesn't do it every day, but when he does he kind of gets on a one-track mind about it. I'm not too worried about him having something medically wrong. He just had a big checkup with bloodwork and all of that. If he gets worse I"ll ask the vet.
  • Yes!  One of our dogs licks the couch constantly!.. We just bought new furnituer and I don't know what to do so he doesn't lick it. I love him but he has bad breathe!

They make sprays that are supposed to make things bitter to the dog. I would also look into using a slip cover for every day use that you can take off when you have company. I can't tell you how much ours has saved our couch.

Also, if he has really bad breath I would look into it. It could be anything from having something caught in his teeth to there being an infection. Either way, you want to get rid of it. We gave ours special treats when he had stinky breath that seemed to help his.

These are hit and miss....with some of my fosters they actually are more enticed to lick/chew the things I put that on.

Some of my dogs do lick the couch others do not...the only problem I had is my dog eating our recliner now twice in the past month.  ::sigh::

  • My dog likes to lick pants...while they're still on people.  She'll lick an occasional couch here and there too.
  • My dogs are not allowed on the couch, but my FI's dog will lick the blankets of his bed at night. Her licking sounds are so loud that I can hear her when he calls me at night, he often has to tell her to stop becuase the sound doesn't let him sleep.
