Scales & psyching yourself out

I feel like I've been making progress. My clothes are fitting better, I can see a difference in pictures from the beginning of the summer to now but I refuse to weigh myself. Everytime I do I feel like the scale hasn't changed and then I get depressed. The last time I weighed myself or took measurements was a month ago and everyday I look at the scale and want to but then don't. Is this normal? I really feel like if I weigh myself the scale hasn't moved and I am just wasting my time even though I'm feeling the changes.

  • Totally normal. You shouldn't be weighing yourself or taking measurements more than 1x/month anyhow in my opinion. Because there are so many changes that we go through in a month. Always weigh yourself at the same time each month. As for getting discouraged. I don't get discouraged and give up, but can be a little disappointed when I see that. What helps me is to realize that you will weigh more in the beginning as muscle weighs more than fat. It is more about the way you feel in your clothes, etc.

    Good luck!

  • I do weigh everyday, but track weekly, if that makes sense. I do it out of habit more than anything: start the shower, jump on the scale, make a mental note. At week's end I actually count the result. For me it's just about knowing.

I spent years not owning or using a scale, and that was the heaviest time of my life.

I am more focused on how my clothes fit and how I feel overall, but I do use my scale as a resource, the same as I use measurements. And while I don't record my weight everyday, I do weigh. After a while it helped me to understand my body cycles - and I know which week I will weigh more thanks to pms!

Bottom line: it's normal to worry about the number, but it's just a number. No one knows it but you, but people DO see how you look in your clothes.

PP is right, a pound of muscle is still a pound, but it takes up less space, so you see the difference in your clothes but not the scale. I know that I will never be 115lbs, because I have a lot of muscle. And I'm okay with that - but it did take a while for me to get that mindset.

  • I hear you. I was on the opposite end of the cycle where I used to weigh myself all the time and got obsessed with it and had to step off and go down to monthly. I already knew/know my cycles so I just weigh myself around the same time each month. Keeps me less freaked out about the ups and downs.

I am with you, I will never be down to 115, but I am happy with where I am at cause I feel better. It's awesome that the clothes are fitting better and that's what counts! Keep it up.

  • I have had good experience weighing in once a week and keeping track. Don't step on the scale more than once a week or you will psych yourself out since weight fluctuates daily based on alot of things. Like the week you have your period, you will most likely weight more, or water weight can be held longer sometimes.
I weigh in on Thursday mornings, then I'm not worrying about the weekend drinks or "cheat food" i may have had!
  • I fall into the same pattern that some of our ladies do. I lost 5 lbs before I started Boot Camp last week and since I started, the scale hasn't moved but I think my clothes are fitting better. I know I should be focused more on that and how I look than the number on the scale, but when you have a weight loss goal in mind (20 lbs) you want to see achievements, even small ones, to reach that goal. It does get frustrating!
I have thought about going to weighing once a month, but I don't know if I can do that. I am almost afraid if I do, and nothing changes on the scale, I may feel like I lost time that I could have changed something.

  • I think thats my pattern, I know I'm making prgoress due to how I feel and how my clothes fit and I don't want to set it back by being disappointed by the scale. I know I'll never weigh 115lbs, at my height that wouldn't be very healthy but I don't want to get focused on a number and feel like I'll do that weighing myself. I will have to stick to weighing myself 1-2x a month. I already make sure its at the same time so I'll work on the cycles.
