I went to my friend's [and BM] baby shower on Saturday. It was lovely, but as she was opening gifts, I realized how little she was getting from her registry. I whispered to her friend, "Is it me, or did she not register for any of this?" The friend, "C," confirmed.
As someone who has just created [and is obsessed with] her own registries, I stuck to it. C had just had a her own baby and when we could adequately whisper, told me her hypothesis. She had just had a son, but they didn't find out the gender. C got everything from her registry, including the "boring" stuff: crib sheets, diaper pail, etc. C figured that because we all know my BM is having a girl, friends and family couldn't resist the adorable baby clothes! I think she's right because I'd estimate 90% of what she got were clothes, which included a baby bikini! It was off the cuteness meter, but, if it were me, I'd want more by the way of diapers. So, I may keep my future babies' gender a secret for this reason.
As a semi-related aside, she registered at myregistry.com, which I found less than ideal. It's a universal regisitry that gathers the items you want from any online reailers. When you click on an item, you leave the registry to go to the specific retailer's site. You have to then go back to the registry to confirm you purchased an item, as opposed to it being done automatically because it isn't linked to any one store. I wonder if that contributed to gift choices.
