can't find a floor length dress... suggestions?

I am lookng to find a dress without a train...just floor length. I don't really want a short dress but would consider ankle length or slightly above. I have tried a bunch of sites but most don't filter out dresses without trains. It is frustrating. Any suggestions?

  • DB has plenty of gowns without trains, as does Alfred Angelo.  Also, a lot of designers have gowns with detachable trains.

  • Dresses with plain trains can be altered to cut the train off. It's no different from hemming which you'll probably need to do anyway.

Look at buying a bridesmaids dress. I am having a small second ceremony in the Catholic Church and I found a beautiful Watters BM dress to wear for it.

Also maybe destination bridal gowns. Most have a very short train if any and
they can often be removed at alterations.
  • Search for destination gowns. as most of them do not have trains and those that do are usually very small "sweep" trains.

  • I got my dress at a prom store. No train + super affordable.
  • I would say don't limit yourself to dresses without trains, look at all of them then cut off the train when you hem it (That's what I did with my reception dress, and it needed to be hemmed anyways!). I think you'll be much happier with the selection!

    Happy Shopping!

  • Have you tried looking at destination wedding gowns, often they have little or no trains. Do you have a Jessica McClintock store there or at the mall? When I first started looking, they had some in the store and online that didn't have trains. Maybe worth a try.

I agree with just getting the dress you want and cutting off the train. I'll be doing the same. Outdoor+longtrain=mess!

  • It depends on how fancy of a gown you want. I also purchased a bridesmaid dress for my wedding dress. I also didn't want a train and I wanted purple embroidery or accent colors. Only bridesmaid dresses offered that for me at an affordable price (and I didn't want just a colored belt).

Prom dresses can also be quite extravagant. Certainly take a peek at those too. You'd be surprised how much money you can save. I have also seen dresses identical to wedding dresses being sold as prom or bridesmaid dresses without the train. So you are in luck :)
  • I bought my dress at DB and it doesnt have a train. I think there's a lot of dresses out there without trains or like previous posters stated you can just have it cut off
  • Another option is you can always bustle a train if you don't wan't to have it taken off and if the gathered fabric doesn't bother you.
  • David's Bridal or Alfred Angelo would probably be the best places to start with. Don't rule out getting a dress that's a bridesmaid's dress in white or ivory. Some of them are floor length.
