They may have allergies or just have sensitive skin. Emmit was getting hot spots big time when we used most dog shampoos, and we don't really give him baths unless hes covered in mud or something. But we have switched to an oatmeal shampoo and a hypoallergenic shampoo. We usually use the hypoallergenic but every once in awhile we  use the oatmeal when he's really muddy (he loves mud). Both of those shampoos were suggested to us because he can get pretty itchy and has sensitive skin.

[QUOTE]In Response to Re: If you have dogs, come in here :   Garlic is actually toxic to dogs.  It wrecks either nerves or kidneys, I can't remember.

Ok LC don't listen to me then. Maybe he was talking about people eating garlic for mosquitoes? :)
  • We use Comfortis for the fleas (and ticks maybe?) and interceptor for heartworm etc. Our dog kept getting fleas last summer bc apparently living in the south the climate plays a part in how suseptible your dog is. Puppies vet told me that comfortis is supposed to be one of the stronger medecines used when you have a problem with fleas. Its not cheap but its the only thing that keeps her from being itchy.

  • Heartworm here, we do all year, but flea med we only do from March to October/November. When Maggie was a puppy and I DID use flea medicine and we were living in the south (and with family dogs in the south), they were year round. We always used vet med.

And now, speaking of, I've got the monster barking in my face and hopping over my lap so I can't see the screen. I think that means I'm done??

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • I use revolution. It also protects against Heartworm. I feel like it is a lot easier to just put their revolution on, then do that and a pill. My Mom has an animal rescue and frontline stopped working for her, and she uses revloution as well.
  • I had my little guy on an oral product called Capstar and combined with Terminex spraying and Advantage it stopped the WORST infestation I've ever seen!
After tiny took the capstar fleas started jumping off him in death throes within 10 minutes of leaving the vet! Worked like a charm and I tried EVERYTHING!

  • I'm super late to this thread, for for fleas and ticks (ticks are horrible here), we use neem shampoo and spray (baths once a month, spray at least once a week), and I also give a garlic powder pill called Bug Off.

  • Frontline and Advantix never work on my dogs. I use Revolution on my 3 dogs and cat and its amazing!

The other thing I tried recently and it was amazing was something that started with a C(sorry, not much help).

The problem with the two of those is that you need a vet pres. for them in my area.

  • I figured it out!

     Comfortis...this stuff is amazing!

  • I'm late to the game as usual.  I use frontline plus and live in the woods, my dogs never get ticks or fleas.

Whatever you do, DON'T use any product by Hartz (flea collars or shampoo, NOTHING).

Hartz products can kill your pet.

  • Pink, I was headed there earlier, and couldn't remember the supporting evidence, so I deleted it.

I knew the Swiffer thing wasn't true, but the Hartz products weren't good.

  • It's a shame that Hartz isn't held accountable for what it is putting in products that are killing people's pets!

  • I know!  And of course their products are so much cheaper so people are likely to buy them.
