Sad panda :(

Re: Sad panda :(

  • number, I brought up seeing the movie as a reward for the students on the honor roll (that's the reward for the 3rd nine weeks honor roll). I think it would be so much fun! And we're only doing it as a read aloud as well, which means I think it would be easier to skip the more violent parts.
    image
  • That would be so much fun, whitsy. I would totally go for that prize if I were in your class.
    image
  • Now I want to read HG again.
  • I think so too musu! I think that since the kids are so into the book, the movie would be a fun ending activity. I don't know what it's going to be rated though.
    image
  • They don't have a rating yet? that is weird.
    image
  • I just finished reading this book with a girl I tutor who is in the 7th grade. I feel that it is appropriate, the most violent thing I notcied was Cato's death, but with Rue's they just described where the spear hit her.

Could you send a note out to the parents to avoid this one parent going to all the others and causing a problem?

Side note- I would love to hear about all the activities and discussions you are doing with this unit, it sounds like so much fun!

  • Barbie has a baby mango!

  • The death scenes aren't even graphic. I forget the exact wording, but I know I've seen a lot worse on tv and movies at a younger age than your kids. I agree, WTF happens in those three magic months that changes EVERYTHING? I'm a bad person to ask this question to, though. I don't think any kid should be sheltered from the realities if the world. I think violent video games are terrible, though. Weird, huh?
    image
  •  Barbie, I'd be happy to e-mail it to you! It's really fun. I found it on a blog that I follow, called Secondary Solutions.

musu, I can't find anything that says for sure, not even on their website or IMDB, unless I'm overlooking it. Probably end up being PG-13.

So, arguments aside, I still think you did everything you should have done before introducing this unit.  Once you get the backing of an admin, you're good to go as far as I'm concerned.  It's not like you're making them read a book that has zero literary merit and then throwing them into an arena and asking them to act out their favorite battles.

ETA: I want to know if this kid has read Twilight.  My opinion of her mother's feelings about HG could be swayed very heavily.

  • I'm gonna guess it will be PG-13 too. Does that mean you wouldn't be able to get yoru kids in, probably?

Yeah, not unless we waited until way closer to the end of the year. A lot of them will turn 13 closer to the end of the year. But they're still mostly 12 right now. Boooo.

  • Musical- Yeah he will be a cantaloupe tomorrow :) Half way!

Whit- I will PM you my email. I would love to see everything. I really enjoyed reading and discussing it with my 7th grader and I would imagine having a whole unit on it would be awesome!

what if the kids who are 12 get permission slips? I don't even know how that works at a theatre. How does a kid prove they are 13 anyway? I know I didn't have an ID at that age.

<div>Ooh.  Now you've given me an idea... we've got to be absolutely done with teaching new material by like May 3 this year so the kids can take an end of course exam on the 7th, and I've been trying to figure out wtf I'm going to do with them between then and the end of the year.  Maybe I'll make them design muttations or something.</div>

<div>I was wondering this, too! I don't think I had an ID with my birthday on it until I got my drivers license, actually.  Unless my school ID did and I just don't remember that?</div>

Hmm, good question! I'm on the honor roll committee, so I definitely think I will bring this up.

There's a lot of free resources on Teachers Pay Teachers, have you used that? It's an awesome site.

    <a href="http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/search?keyword=hunger+games&seltype=0&pricerange=1&seltype=3&grade=0&gradelevel=5" rel="nofollow">http://www.teacherspayteachers.com/search?keyword=hunger+games&seltype=0&pricerange=1&seltype=3&grade=0&gradelevel=5</a>
    image
  • I haven't read Hunger Games, but I specifically remember reading the Outsiders (gang warfare, teenager dying, etc.) in 5th grade class. Isn't Lord of the Flies for about that age group too?

On my own, I know I was reading books about the Holocaust at that age, along with books like Are You There God, It's Me Margaret and Forever... so yeah, sex and violence and real people doing unspeakable things.
  • I had school IDs starting in middle school so I wouldn't have had one in 6th grade. But they didn't say my age or birthday. Just my grade. I think we had permission slips in 6th/7th grade when teachers wanted to show a PG-13 movie. So I don't know if that works at a theatre but its worth a mention anyway. I'm guessing most 6th graders are allowed to watch PG-13.

  • I read lord of the flies in 10th grade. I think it could've been a middle school book though.

It is a pretty violent book and some parents might not want their kids reading about teenagers slaughtering each other.

That said, you gave her options and she declined.  You don't have to stop the book for everyone.

ETA:  Violent but not graphic.  Not as bad as plenty of things on tv.  (But then I wasn't allowed to watch tv at that age... Some parents are particular about such things.)
  • As usual, I'm confused. The kids who are 12 can still see it, they just need permission slips, no?

<div>You never know.  H wasn't allowed to watch the TMNT movie when he was 11 (5th grade) because it was PG-13.  </div><div>
</div><div>ETA: He wasn't allowed to watch ANY PG-13 movies until he was actually 13.  The TMNT just sticks out in my mind because, come on.  Ninja Turtles were MADE for kids. He also wasn't allowed to watch PG movies until he was 9, I think. </div>

I don't know how it would work with a movie theater. I just assumed each 12 year old would need a parent or guardian present, but it may be different if a school wanted to bring in students to see it.

And see, this is my problem. I just don't remember the book that way at all. My copy is at school, I'm going to have to try to reread it over the weekend and maybe reevaluate my choice.

I know that any adult can take a kid to see a movie, so you should be allowed without a problem. The school needs permission from the parents, but you shouldn't need permission from the theater.
    image
  • I tutor a class of 6th, 7th and 8th graders during the summer and they've all read the entire HG series.  It was disappointing, because I wanted to read it with them and do some small activities, but it wasn't happening.

That said, I was kind of surprised so many of them had read it, because the political concepts and the idea of kids murdering kids was pretty disturbing to me. However, I'm an adult looking at it from that lens, kwim? As a kid, I'd eat it up.

Bottom line, though, you did the right thing. You principal approved it, you gave plenty of options, and you're the content expert. Go with your gut.
  • The concept of kids murdering each other is disturbing, but I don't think it's inappropriate. Lord of the Flies has that issue. So does Harry Potter. It's a reality too. It's in the news all the time. I just think that by sixth grade these kids are aware of reality and if they aren't, they should be.
