Storing my dress before the wedding

I purchased my dress a year ahead of my wedding and it is now hanging in my closet. I read somewhere that you need to lay it flat if its going to be hanging for that long, just to make sure it doesnt warp out of shape. Has anyone stored their dresses at home for that long before? What did you guys do?

  • I've heard of some brides laying it flat under a bed too.  Just make sure it's in a bag and air it out once in a while.

  • uhoh.

Long story, but I have owned mine for 7 years, and it has been hanging.  It looks a little tired.  I suppose this is why.......................  Now I'm nervous.  I was hoping a steaming would liven it up a bit.  I wonder if I should look for another dress....

  • Not sure if I should post or not....I just got my dress in early April and it's hanging up....should it be laying flat? My wedding is mid July. I should air out once a month too?

You will be fine, mine was in the closet from Oct-May. Only coming out for fittings.

  • I picked my dress up in late February for my July 16th wedding.  It's been hanging and with the hanging straps that are on the dress, I haven't found any issue as far as the relaxing of the fabric.  We actually are trying to prevent it from getting wrinkled (got it steamed in Febuary) so that when I break it out of the bag in June for my pre-wedding bridal portrait, we don't even have to do anything besides maybe steam out the edges of the lace.  We may get it professionally steamed (and maybe cleaned) if the bridal portrait causes any wrinkling (or gets dirty).  Anyway... neither here nor there .... my dress is hanging and it will stay hanging until we ship it off to get preserved. :-)
July 16, Our Wedding Day, is also International Juggling Day!

i've had my dress since december 2008 (canceled wedding). i've opened it every once in awhile to check and it is fine. i am now engaged and getting married in august and i did try it on a few weeks ago to see if it fits and if i need other alterations besides the bustle. it looks just as nice as the day that i got it in. it's been hanging in a closet in a garment bag.
