Alteration Costs

I'm just curious, now that it seems like quite a few of us have had at least our first fitting, how much were you quoted for your alterations? Was it more or less than you anticipated?
It doesn't have to be perfect to be everything I want!

Re: Alteration Costs

  • While I havent done my alterations yet my seasmstress quoted me at 95.00 which is about half of what I expected.

  • I had the hem and bustle done as well as the top made into a sweetheart neckline.  It cost $250 which was about $50 less than I expected and $50 more than I had been quoted.

  • HA!  I had some dress issues... and it's going to be about $450 now.

Dress issues - I was measured between sizes.  I knew I was going to loss weight so I went a size down.  The biggest problem was my hips (1 inch) which is where I ALWAYS lost my weight.  NEVER the boobs, NEVER.  Got my dress, and it fit my hips (actually needs ot be taken in) and my girls are SMOOSHED.  So they have to let out the top of my dress...

  • Mine was just over $250, I think, the add a bustle, take it in at some parts, and hem it considerably (because I'm super short).

  • $85 to have the dress taken down a little and in on both sides from my bust to my knees. Hopefully when I go next week for my second fitting it fits! Just need a bustle - no idea how much that will cost.

  • I've had cups added, bustle made, hem taken up and bust taken in. The total was $275 which is much less than I had anticipated. My tailor is also steaming my dress and veil, and the dresses of all my bridesmaids and moms, at no extra charge.

  • Mine was $215.00 - needed the top taken in - Skirt hemmed and Bustle added - i WAS thinking it would be close to $500.00 - so that was a relief!! :)

  • Sounds like some good deals and a few frustrations going on! I'm lucky that all I need is a bustle that I'm paying $50 for.

  • I was quoted $125.  That is for bustle, cups and the hips taken out.  I budgeted $250 for it.

  • Mine was a little over what I had budgeted. I thought it would be 250 - 300, but it ended up being 350, thank God my mom offered to foot the bill on this as well as my dress. We decided to have a lot done to it, though. The length was shortened, the bustle put in, the neckline changed to a sweetheart, and I replace the zipper back with a corset back.

  • Mine were only $205 -- which is MUCH less than I expected. I had the opposite of most people and I've gained weight since I bought my dress. :( So I added a corset which helped with the costs and then I added a bustle. I go in for my 2nd fitting tomorrow. Hopefully nothing else needs to be done. I've been good about my diet since the 1st fitting.

  • I had a bustle made and cups added. That ended up being about $250. It was much more than I expected but the seamstress had so many loops for the bustle which raised the price. I love how it looks so it was worth it :)

  • Mine was 130. I had it taken in at the bust, hemmed my dress is for someone 6ft and I'm only 5'5 plus my 4in heels, and clips added to the to so my bolero will attach to my dress so it will stay in place.

  • Mine is $181 for the hem, the 5pt bustle, added straps, sewing on the belt (to get rid of loops), reworking the zipper (dress of the rack had the zipper falling off), and steam/clean/iron. I had budgeted $200.

  • mine was $120 for the hem (I'm short) and $40 for the bustle!
  • Mine is $270, which is about 70 more than I expected but she is hemming, adding cups, making a bustle and taking in the top slightly so I don't feel like it's an unfair price.

Eeek. I'm either getting hosed or its because I'm in hcol ... Boston. Petticoat and lining hem, plus French bustle is 155. Second fitting will be between 125 to 150 to hem the dress just the front part and no beading or lace... Just satin I may have to get it taken in which starts at 65. Then I have a belt that has to be sized which is like 50, and the belt was a sample so needs some beadwork repaired, so that is 35 an hour. Having it steamed is another 90 on top of that.
  • My alterations were out of control, way more than expected. It was about $475 for deepening the sweetheart neckline ($150 alone, due to the boning and detail), adding in the inner skirt, hemming, taking in the sides at the bust, plus taxes. The bustle was free, which is a small mercy.
  • Mine was $440 which was a bit more than what I expected... I am dropping the back to make it lower, the hem had to be taken up a bit on one side and the bustle has 30 pick ups... So even though it was higher than anticipated the bustle is amazing... And complicated!
  • I just had my first fitting today. I did not need a hem because I'm tall x_x however I lost about 10-20 lbs since I bought the dress so they had to take it in, in a few places. The straps are also a little too long, so they are shortening them just a pinch. Add the bustle. Was $120. $30 less than I was quoted. $80 - $180 less than I had expected - feared.
  • Kleinfelds charges a set fee for alterations..I think it was around $700.  It's a ton of money but my dress was under budget so with alterations it was exactly what I was planning on spending.
  • Just had my fitting on Satuday actually and it was $165 for a hem, bustle, cups and they're doing two small darts around the top of the bust so the dress stays closer to me (my ladies are on the small size :-)).  I thought that was pretty reasonable for what they're doing!
