suggestions on what to do about make-up (very long!)

I went for a make-up trial and while I liked some of it, I really didn't like other parts at all.  Although I wear make-up regularly, I feel like I don't know much about it and I don't want to have to worry about doing it myself on the day of the wedding, especially since I know I'll be nervous.

Things I didn't like...........First of all, ALL they use is bare minerals (I forgot the name of the particular brand they have) which I've read on here numerous times that it washes you out and makes your face shiny with photography...I'm not sure if that's completely true but I'm worried about it.  Secondly, I hate glitter.  I prefer subtle, matte looks.  The eyeshadow, of course, was very sparkly and she applied it all around my eyes (is there a reason for that??).  Third, I have acne scars and discoloration and it was definitely not covered at all.  I cover them on a daily basis so I'm not really sure why they weren't covered in the trial when it's obviously something that should be taken care of....

Things I did like..........The convenience of it is nice because I'd be able to get my make-up done at the same place as my hair.  Also, I liked the way she applied my eyeliner and mascara, but I also feel like that's something I could do myself...although I'd really rather not.  And lastly, I have to worry about oily skin but surprisingly the make-up lasted better than my everyday powder and foundation and wasn't as oily as it normally gets.

I guess I'm torn because I really wanted this to work out.  I've called several places in my area and EVERY one of them uses some type of bare minerals (not to mention I've had an allergic reaction to certain kinds before!  Luckily, the make-up from the trial didn't affect my skin).  And airbrush is definitely unheard of in my small town, unfortunately, so that's not an option.  Sooooo...opinions????  Do you think I should just maybe find my own type of eyeshadow and go for another trial at the same place?  Or should I keep calling other places?  Or bite the bullet and do my own (which I really don't want to do!)??  Has anyone else had problems finding MUA and make-up they like?  Advice please!

  • I have never heard of a wedding MUA using Bare Minerals although I see it discussed here alot.  It's unheard of where I live.  It's unfortunate because airbrushing would cover your acne very well.

Were you very specific about what you wanted or did you just let the MUA choose everything?  Did you let them know you weren't happy about it?  Sometimes you don't get it right at the first trial.  I was very unhappy with my first one so I switched to another MUA whom I loved, but even then, we tried a couple of different looks until I was completely satisfied.  If they don't know what you don't like about it, they can't fix it.

Another option I have seen is for you to do your own foundation, and let the MUA do your eyes.  This is also usually less expensive.  Based on what you have told me, I am leaning towards you trying a different MUA, but don't be afraid to vocalize what you like and don't like.  Let them know the concerns you had with your first trial and see if you get a better result.

I've also heard mineral makeup does not photograph well. I would go to one of the department store makeup counters or a Sephora/Ulta type store. Tell them you are looking for wedding makeup.

I am doing my own makeup, using mostly products from Smashbox & Bobbi Brown.
  • I mentioned to the cosmetologist at the salon I am getting my hair done at (and also has a bridal boutique connected to it) about the problems with photos & Bare Minerals and she said she never heard of that and them using that product draws clientele. So I am glad to have found this out on TK before getting it done.

  • Thanks for the advice!  I do consider it partly my fault because I wasn't specific enough about what I wanted.  I didn't realize what type of eyeshadow they used or anything, so I didn't speak up until after she was done.

Mah976, most people in my area have never heard of bare minerals causing a problem in photographs either and when I say something about it, they act like I'm crazy and just being picky, lol.

Stephie, I agree that it's a shame I can't find anyone that does airbrush in my area.  Especially since my wedding is in June and I have combination/oily skin, it would be perfect!  I have considered trying to find my own foundation and powder and allowing the MUA to accentuate my eyes.

Does anyone have any suggestions for a great foundation and/or pressed powder for sensitive oily skin that photographs well?  I'd like to have one that feels light and not creamy or greasy.

Here are a few suggestions regarding foundation and powder. I have oily and sensitive skin.

Matt Touch primer from YSL will keep your make up fresh for hours. You may use this product with foundation and powder or just with powder.

I love MAC´s mineralize powder it gives you a natural look and radiance throughout the day.

I´ve tried numerous of foundations over the years and come to love Guerlain´s Parure Aqua which is a light foundation but still gives you coverage. Another great foundation that has also worked wonders for me is Diorskin Forever extreme wear.

  • There are airbrush foundations at Sephora & you can get it online if there isnt one in your area.  They are a little more expensive, but i tried it at the store and they worked beautifully.  Plus Sephora is good with returns too if it wasn't right for you.  Good luck!

  • I know that Bare Minerals makes you look like a ghost in professional pictures first hand. Luckily, I was a guest and not a member of the WP. It looked pretty terrible.

Thanks again for the suggestions everyone!  I went to Sephora today in a nearby town and looked around....I had never been in Sephora before, and it was a little overwhelming because there are so many products!  Haha.  Anyway, I decided to come back another day for a free consultation.  One of the ladies there suggested "Make-up Forever" (I think that's right...) for foundation and powder for my skin type.  She said it photographs really well and they have some specifically for oil control.  Has anyone ever tried the Make-up Forever brand?  What are your experiences with it?

Siljereed, thanks for the suggestion on the primer.  I've never used a primer, but I think I definitely need to look into it.

Mah976, I had no idea they had airbrush!  I'll look into that also.  Thanks :-)
  • Make Up For Ever is a great foundation for what you need. I almost went with it myself, but prefer Smashbox (it's a thicker cream as opposed to a liquid). I am using their powder and fix-it spray though.

and DEFINITELY go with primer. that's the key to long-lasting makeup imo. Smashbox has a good one, and you can buy trial sizes for cheaper than their full size stuff. you'll want the "light" formula, it's designed for oily skin.

I agree with pooh. I have oily skin and have been using HD Make Up Forever for a few months now. And definitely go with the Smashbox light primer; those two products combined are great for oily skin!!
