Asking for Tools on Registry?

My fiance and I were chatting about items we could use around the house and he asked if he could ask for tools. Is this acceptable? I'm all for it, if that is a tyical item. We own a hammer and some nails and he is a real man's man and could use some tools!

It's not traditional, but hey, it's your registry, and if you really have a need for it, then why not? Just be sure to remember that some of your guests will want to get you something other than a power drill, so be sure to register for a few other, more classic items as well.

Traditionally, you are suppoed to get gifts to outfit your home and start your life together. I think tools are a perfectly acceptable registry item, since they will be used in your home. There is no need for all of the regsitry items to be linens and kitchen items at all. There is so much more involved in keeping up a home.

FWIW, I also support recreation items on a registry, because it supports an active lifestyle.

Thanks! We have our own place, so we already pretty much everything that we want... there are a few things that I would like newer (a lot are hand-me-downs) and tools and recreational things are items that we do not have much of!

Oh yes!

My "tools I want" list is second biggest, next to the kitchen. I love to build and restore furniture, so it fits with what I want to do for my home.

I actually just finished designing a 4' x 4' upholstered ottoman with a flip tray and a shelf for underneath... I was inspired by this great futon cover I found at Ikea, and I'm so excited to cut it apart and put the fabric to use!

The first thing I decided to register for is a chop saw... it's a bit of a big ticket item, but that's okay! If anything... my grandparents or some of the girls will pool for it - they've bought me powertools in the past.

I guess you could call me "Mrs. Dad" type as opposed to "Mr. Mom."

If you'll use it, register for it!

Everything I've heard says tools are becoming increasingly common on registries. After all, pots and pans are a form of tool, right? They're just used differently! May as well put something on there a guy would be more excited about.

Also, my SIL and her husband had a home improvement "shower" where all the gifts were home improvement related.

My brother and his wife had tools on their registry at my brother's request. I thought it was a great idea and heard from some of my brother's male friends that they were glad to buy him tools-- it definitely beat having to buy their buddy hand towels and decorative napkins!!

We have some tools on our registry, but also put some things that I don't expect people to buy us, but since we get 10% off what ever remains on our registry after the wedding we felt that if we don't get it we can buy it for ourselves with the discount, or if we do it, those people will get a huge thank you for all chipping in for the more expensive items we registered for. It is your registry though, if you need it put it on there, someone will see the relevence.

GO FOR IT!! I actually put a pink tool set on my registry

My FI's family is in construction so I am slightly worried about people trying to buy him tools because he knows the good stuff and exactly what he wants. Agree with PP, I think that you can register at Home Depot. I have even heard of "man showers" were the guys get together and get the groom tools and "boy stuff."

Some friends had a "Tool and Pantry" shower - tools for him and kitchen items for her. It was a nice way to get the boys involved.

My fiance wanted to add tools to the registry, I said go for it. That way he has no excuse to not fix things around the house. = )

You can register at Home Depot. We looked at them, but we're registering at Sears instead - same brands, friendlier service, and more variety of types of gifts.

Defintiely register for the tools.

If you don't have much to register for (we don't since we've been on our own for years) you could consider registering for your honeymoon. We are definitely planning to do that....I have all the kitchen goodies I could ever need and no where to store them anyway!

my FI and I just gave his buddy a mitre saw as a wedding gift. little did we know it was actually his bride who put it on the registry. I say go for it.

I think you could definitely ask for tools! It's a tradition in my FI's family to do a Jack & Jill shower where they get all kinds of manly gifts for the future husband. We got his last cousin to get married a shop vac. I think it's a great idea!
