registry questions...

So, FI just found out you can build a registry on amazon.com.  He is super excited about this (where until now the registry has been something he has not wanted to be a part of at all).

We have a very small registry, since 3/4 of our guests will be Chinese, and traditionally Chinese give more money than gifts (and in all honesty we'd like cash anyways, but I didn't say that out loud.... 0=]).

Well, MY family is not Chinese.  Our existing registry is almost full, and we're still a month out!  There is nothing else we want at the store we are registered at (very small apt - already most of the stuff we're getting will go into storage until we get a larger place).

so...a couple questions

1) is an amazon registry tacky in general (I kinda think it is...)?

2) is it too late to add another registry (we would just put it on the website without actually saying anything to anyone)?

if 1 and 2 are both OK
3) is it OK to put more personal/non-traditional stuff on there, since you can actually find that stuff on amazon? (like, I love board games.  love.)

I don't think so. I see nothing wrong with an Amazon registry.

Not if your other one is almost full. Putting it on the website is fine, or if someone asks you where you're registered, you can give them this registry info too.

Sure!  (We registered for board games too.)
  • I think if you're past shower time and a month out, it would be a waste of time to add another registry. I doubt you'd get many hits on it.

  • My friend has an amazon registry with board games. It totally fits her personality. They've already been bought!

I wouldn't put random crap on it like toilet paper, but household entertainment is cool, IMO.

  • I've only gotten two of the gifts off my registry as a shower gift - the rest have all been wedding gifts!

    Thanks!

hehehe - cengle  - what's your favorite game? (I'm always looking for new ones :))

We registered for board games.  If it suites you two as a couple, register for whatever.  Just not TP like msmarymac said, lol!

  • haha - TP would have to be a Costco registry  :-p

I love board games - FI is getting into them more and more :)

I have game nights all the time and invite people over!

  • I think all 3 are fine.  The only trick with the amazon registry is returning.  Since so much of what you register for on there is from another vendor, you could get stuck paying shipping to return, and I don't kow what all receipts you'd need.  I'd just look into that before setting it up.

One suggestion I read was to think seasonal - what things do you need for winter (heated blanket?), spring (picnic basket?), summer (camping gear?), fall (cushy seats to use when you go watch your fave football team?).  If we hadn't needed so many basics, we may have gone this route.
  • for any/every one who registered for board games, which ones???

(the more non-traditional, the better - my favorites are Betrayal at House on the Hill, Dominion, and Carcasonne....if you recognize any of those)

  • I like to give the couple something they want and may need to get them started in life.

My sister got a camera last sunday at her shower and I wouldn't consider that a "shower" gift.. but if you think about it.. she will use it on her honeymoon and to take pictures of their life together.. and eventually kids.

Board games will help keep you guys bonded .. which is hard in marriage.  So I don't see anything wrong with it.

I think you will only run into issues if the gifts are for only one person and not house related.  (ie. husband likes to fish.. wife doesn't.. i wouldn't think it would be appropriate to register for the rod)

I don't love the idea of amazon... but to each his own.  Target would have board games.. but it is ultimately up to you.
  • Settlers of Catan.

Crap, I looked at my friend's registry and since the board games were bought, she doesn't have them on there anymore. I can't remember what they were. But she did register for this:

  • Amazon registry sounds like a good idea to me.  I think I would go crazy trying to pick since there's EVERYTHING on Amazon.

I love games too but we didn't really register anywhere that sells games.  Love that idea!  My recomendations: If you like Carcassone and Settlers then try Ticket to Ride.  Also Fluxx is wicked fun, Bohnanza (sp?), and Spot it is a wicked fun quick party game.  Oh and Loaded Questions!!!! So fun with friends (esp ones that have fun being innapropriate, lol). Quelf is pretty fun too.

  • Amazon is fun and fine but I would also register at a bricks-and-mortar store if you have older guests.  Some just aren't comfortable shopping online.
