Wedding Woes

Change date or change reception site

I have had my heart set on an Oct wedding as well as an outdoor ceremony and indoor/outdoor reception site.  We chose the date of Oct 13, 2012 and all my planning has been around this date.  My decorations, flowers  etc are for an Oct wedding.

I've had problems finding a reception site.  Either they are too expensive or won't hold enough (our wedding will probably be around 350-400).  I finally find a great place to hold the ceremony outside by a river with lots of scenery and the indoors is beautiful and can hold plenty of chairs.  It's within our budget as well.  So I look at their availability and they are booked for the ENTIRE month of Oct in 2012.  The only dates they have available for a wedding would be Sept 1 or Nov 3 of 2012.

So I know I DO NOT want a Nov wedding and Sept may work only.....Sept 1st is Labor Day weekend, and of course all of my family is from out of state.  We've already pushed our wedding back a year (supposed to get married mid-Oct of this year but then pushed it back to mid-Oct next year).

So do I change my month date, push it back another year or just change the venue altogether to a place I'm not as excited about.  As well as do I have it on a holiday weekend......

Re: Change date or change reception site

  • It depends on if you have your heart set on this location, or if its just convinient. I think if you arent absouloutly in love with the venue than give yourself a few more months and look around some more, if you are in love with it than book it and move the date,
Maybe it would be best to find another venue, for the family traveling from out of state it may be hard considering work the next day!!? this is a tough situation though, i hope you two get it all sorted out and the wedding goes smoothly. Good Luck bride2b!

Is there a special reason why you want that specific date? If the date has special meaning then You will have to find another venue or book that venue for 2013. But if the date has no special meaning and it sounds like this venue is perfect then book it for September. The nice thing about a long weekend is that people have more time to travel for the wedding.
    Good luck.

  • Aside from like...pumpkins or Halloween specific decorations, I can't thnk of anything that you could use in October that wouldn't also work in November or September.

If all of your family is from out of state and would be travelling to get to your wedding anyway, it might be more convenient for them to travel on Labor Day weekend, seeing as how most offices/schools will be closed that Monday.  You would just have to send out Save the Dates earlier than normal to be sure people don't make other vacation plans then.  And why are you so against a November wedding?  The weather on November 3rd isn't going to be that much different than the weather 3 days earlier in October.

  • I would move it to Labor Day weekend because the begiinning of Nov. could be very cold for an outdoor wedding in Iowa.  However, choosing a holiday weekend for your wedding will mean some people won't come.  Many families have standing plans for that weekend.  The bad news is that some people won't come.  The good news is that your catering bill will be cheaper.

  • This is why you start looking for a venue before you choose a date.

  • I figured that having over a year and a half we wouldn't have a problem with our date being booked let alone the entire month.

And I called the venue, the reason Oct is completely booked is because they have a haunted house all that month, so it doesn't matter what year they don't do Oct weddings.

So I feel a little better knowing that it's not just because it's a very popular month that all brides want.  But it doesn't help my decision of either having the wedding a month earlier or finding another site.

  • You literally just need to decide what is more important.  Venue or date.  WALLAH!
