Keep bugs away when candles aren't allowed.

Well I'm getting married on a farm in front of a pond and reception in open air barn.

I must be an idiot cus i attract mosquitos like theres no tomorrow and theres water and its at night and they don't allow candles. WEll they might allow a few on the patio but not inside the barn.

Heres my plans so far... I really gotta do every thing possible so please shoot out any ideas.

I'm going to ask if they can fog the area beforehand or spray downt they yard beforehand.

Theres 2 large doors to the barn so at each door i'm going to put a thermacell. I've heard they work really well and control a 12 ft radius. So i'm hoping that will keep them from coming inside.
The owner said he'd light a few tiki torches outside and they might let me put a few of the off lanterns on some tables outside. Other then that i'm going to spray the entrances with 100% deet. I want to keep something on each table to help too tho and without candles - i'm not sure how to do that? I was thinking about somekind of liquid in a container with a led light too make it look pretty... some kind of liquid that keeps bugs away. Other then just dumping bug spray around... I'm not sure - i heard of listerene helping but idk if thats true.

I don't want the place to reek of bugspray either. something affordable preferably.

  • Use an large electric fan pointing out from each doorway.  Small flying things have a hard time moving against the flow of air pressure.

I would NOT advise having a bug repellant liquid in an open container where you will be eating.  The strong scent of it may very well put people off the food.  You could try using some of the plants/flowers that bugs don't like in the centerpeices, like marigolds, lemongrass, sented geranium.  (more at http://www.colostate.edu/Depts/CoopExt/4DMG/Pests/mosquit.htm or google plants that keep bugs away.)

You might also try some of these: http://www.amazon.com/OFF-71703-Off-Clip-Starter/dp/B0043G63ZS Sort of like the candle but fire-free.

  • There are also bug repellant bracelets that you could give to everyone.. they aren't very stylish but they will keep the mosquitos at bay.. it looks like Amazon also has reasonably priced boxes of 50  http://www.amazon.com/Evergreen-Research-SB39001-Repelling-SuperBand/dp/B002ECFV5G/ref=sr_1_4?ie=UTF8&qid=1338926483&sr=8-4

  • 'Off' brand makes a small fan you can discreetly put on the tables. They work great!  I use them on the beach and when I'm sitting outside. Maybe if you put a couple on the table hidden slightly by the center piece it will help. They lay flat and are very very quiet.
  • YOu can also have someone treat the lawn area a few days before the reception with insecticides.  ONce it dries, it is safe for you and your guests to walk on.

<div>Yep.  We used to use a fogger before parties at our house.  Works really well.  </div>

The suggestion above about natural repellant plants and flowers is a good one. There are also a lot of essential oils that help as natural insect repellants without the bug spray smell. I make soaps and people seem to like essential oils of lavender, tea tree, and citronella in bug-off bars. Other bug-off oils might be lemongrass, peppermint, thyme, basil, and cinnamon. What type of table covering or centerpiece are you having? There are some good recipes online to make insect repellant spray with essential oils, maybe you could spray the area with that? Whatever you decide to use, be sure to spray before you bring in any food/drink/utensils so these don't get contaminated.

  • Fogger is a must, and the OFF! repellant fans work really well! Good luck! Sounds like its going to be a cute wedding!
  • I've used the Mosquitno wristbands and they actually work!  They smell sweet and come in many colors so you can coordinate with your wedding colors and it could be a fun party favor.  They also have stickers, but I haven't tried those yet.  I saw them at Tractor Supply, but I looked up the website and you can buy them there too. www.mosquitnoband.com . Maybe they would give you discount if you bought a lot.

  • We are having an outdoor wedding, we are going to be using a fogger the day before and tiki torches the day of...I am not using the bug candles because they have that smell that seems to turn everyone off from eating. I was going to have out on a small table some fans and a nice bug spray for people to use if they are still getting bitten.
