Guest Accomodations

Just out of curiosity, are any of you placing room blocks on hotel rooms, or are you letting guests choose their own place to stay?

Any of the hotels in particular been easy to work with for room blocks?

I am torn on whether I want to let everyone choose or whether I should try and get a group rate.

Thanks for the feedback!

We thought about doing a room block for our OOT guests(Most of our guests are OOT). But we decided not to, because everyone have their own budget and style as to what kind of hotel and room they want. Instead we have a website where we put links sites with discount rates like smartervegas.com and priceline.com Many of our guests are staying in different hotels that fits they're style and budget. They're treating it like a vacation trip too!

We are doing a room block with Harrah's Total Experience, we chose 2 hotels, PH and Paris, they can chose from any of them and they will hold the rooms until 30 days out. Best part is that it costs me nothing and the deal they are getting can't be beat even with coupons.

We have started out with a very small room block at Green Valley Ranch (10 rooms) in Henderson because this is pretty close to our venue.  We knew that with our Wedding Party & family we'd be able to fill those with no problem because those people had already told us they wanted to stay where we're staying.  If our venue was closer to the strip, we probably wouldn't have done any type of block since those hotels usually end up offering huge discounts.  I think a majority of the ladies on here did not reserve any room blocks, they referred people to smartervegas.com.

We got a great deal at the Vdara.  They set up a room block that is good about a month up until the wedding and the rooms (actually theyre all suites) are at a great discount.  The guy that helped us at the Vdara also set up a really convenient and easy website that our guests can use to book the reserved rooms online.

We didn't have nearly enough guests to make blocking at our hotel (MB) worthwhile, and since I'm pretty sure there are more hotel rooms in Vegas than there are residents, I didn't really want to make that call for them.  On our wedding website, I listed the other hotels in the immediate vicinity, and pointed people toward a couple of resources they could use to get the best deal.  We had a plurality of our guests at Excalibur, and the rest were scattered all over the city.

I'm going to do a block of rooms at the Mandalay Bay and the Orleans (where the reception is) but mainly for our family, everyone else is on their own but i will send out coupon updates and smartervegas.com.  I will also put some other items on our website.

It's definitely a very good idea to block rooms because it costs nothing and it guarantees your procrastinating guests will not be left out if they want to stay at the wedding hotel.  We blocked a bunch of rooms at Mandalay and the price was about $189/night which was about $40/night less than retail price for that same weekend at the time I got the block, so not a big savings, but the block is good from now up until 30 days before the wedding, so anyone who wants to stay at Mandalay and doesn't bother to book will still be able to up until a month prior.  I'm keeping our website updated with coupons and things so guests that are tech saavy and actually look at the site will save but not everyone will want to or will book early enough where they can get a good deal.

Agree. that's why we did a room block too.  It cost us nothing and very litttle time and it's a nice way to help our guest out with their accomodations.
Of course we let them know they are welcome to stay wherever they wish but if they want to stay with our wedding party it's convenient to have the room block.  I wish my friend would have done it for her wedding (they stayed at the aria).

Yeah, but it's rare for any large hotel to hit 100% occupancy unless there's some major event going on in the area.  (ETA: Or a holiday weekend.)  I know most of our guests hadn't booked their hotels until within a few weeks of the wedding, and none of them reported any trouble with getting in at their hotel of choice.  It's great if you can get a better rate, but I know at MB, since we weren't going through a WC we were told that we'd need to be booking a LOT of rooms to get any sort of discount.

I'm not saying it's a bad thing to do, I just don't think it's necessary in Vegas, or as helpful there as it is in other cities.

I haven't decided 100% on this.  I know that lot's of our guests have already picked where they're going to stay, and it's not where we're staying.  I guess I'll have to get an idea of how many people are planning (or would be interested ) on staying a certain hotels first.

We haven't done a room block. With our ceramony package, our guests get an extra like 10% off any Harrahs properties. I did make a wedding website and put the address on our STDs and have updating it with hotel coupons and such...

We are getting a block of rooms at Treasure Island(TI) which we are designating as our Home Base.  Our ceremony is at Wynn and reception at Maggiano's so TI made a close by, nice, affordable and familiar hotel for us to encourage people to stay at.  We really want to keep everyone together as much as possible for logistical purposes.  Of course guests can stay anywhere they want, but for us it's the excitement of spending time with all the Vegas newbies in the group that is a big part of the fun.
TI was great to work with.  They were very flexible.  The big bonus of doing the block was that they would waive the ridiculous $20 per night resort fee that is normally mandatory.  Also, it locks the current room rate price in to protect against price increases.  If the rate happens to go down, we can re-book the block at that rate. The block is available up to one month prior to the event.

We did not do a room block. We wanted people to stay where ever they were comfortable. We got married at MB and a majority of our guests stayed there, but we also had guests at the Luxor and Excalibur. Many guests took advantage of the free tram between these three hotels.

I would send out mass emails to family/friends w/ hotel deals when I saw them. I got my ILs a week stay at MGM for <$500. You really couldn't beat that deal.

We did a block at MB where the ceremony is and like others have said it was super easy and they hold them until 30 days prior.  Many of our guests have never been and have expressed an interest in staying where we will be and where the ceremony is so I think most people will be using the block. The rate isn't too bad either, we got 146 per night.  I am also updating my wedding website frequently with any offers and websites I have come across and letting people know that they are not required to stay at MB in the room block and they are free to make their own arrangements that fit their situation best.

We will do a block because of 1) the discount and 2) because if we meet the 10 room minimum we get a free upgrade.
