DIY... ironing of wedding dress?

My satin dress has some wrinkles and I will be traveling to FL for my wedding, so I figured I would wait until I get there to press the wrinkles out.  Well I initially was going to try and find a cleaners to do it for me, but then I starting thinking maybe I can do it myself with some help from my mom which willl be free!!!

Has anyone ironed/pressed their own dress, if so what was your experience with that?  Should I do it myself of leave it to the professionals?

Re: DIY... ironing of wedding dress?

  • Personally I'd steam it rather than iron it. You can buy small hand held steamers if you'd like to do it yourself, or you can have it done by the professionals.

I'm a really clumsy person... the idea of taking an iron to my wedding dress gives me visons of iron shaped burn holes and the like... lol.
  • Yeah I was looking into getting a garment steamer, but I would probably have to pick one up when I get to FL.
  • Any relatives in FL, or is it a DW?

Maybe, if you'd really like to do it yourself - it might be possible to rent a steamer? not sure. Probably less hassle to get someone else to do it. :)

    Good luck :)
  • You definitely don't want to iron it. If you DIY, definitely steam it. If I were you, I would research local dry cleaners and seamstresses and find out what they charge. It may end up costing less than the cost of purchasing a hand steamer. Personally, I am having it professionally done rather than risk doing it wrong and having a big water stain on my satin dress.
  • It would be worth the money and peace of mind to have a cleaner do it. Esp if you have to buy a steamer, it wouldn't be much a price difference. Your hotel may even be to steam it for you. I'm having a DW and I spoke to my planner at the hotel. She'll take my dress for me and get it steamed for free.

  • When you steam satin yourself, you cannot touch it until it dries completely, otherwise you could stain it. Definitely research dry cleaners and have it done professionaly. It's not worth the risk. I'm traveling from Florida to Boston and found a dry cleaners where I'll be taking my dress for steaming.
