Roll Call? And a silly question...

Everyone okay? DId anybody get hit by a tornado? We didn't get anything except rain and hail and some nasty winds earlier.

So silly question. I'm new to apartment dwelling, I live on the top floor with my Dad and will be moving to the top floor in a few days with FI. So...when a tornado comes..what do you do? Just get in the bathtub? I'm sure I'm over reacting, but now I feel like being on the top floor is super unsafe...and now I'm nervous, so I wanted to ask you ladies since you probably know the answer to this!

You want an interior space that has a door you can close and no windows.  The bathtub is generally a good spot.  Grab a blanket and "duck and cover" like they taught you in elementary school (I hope).

And it is generally best to get to the lowest level of your home, but really, unless it's like an F-5, you should be okay in your apartment.

We were on the road racing in front of the wall cloud to get home. Unfortunately, we got nailed by the softball size hail (talk about scary stuff) and were stuck under an overpass at 161 and 183 for 20 min or so.  Then we tried to make a mad dash to Albert's work garage (161 and MacArthur).  We hit every light and got hit by the 2nd wave as we were pulling in.  Trees and signs down every where and apparently the area over here was pummelled with hail for a nice long while.  Now I am stuck in his office building until the next storm passed through. Hey, at least the Knot isn't blocked.

As for your question, if you can get to the bottom level, you want to.  Our apartment is on the 2nd level, so we go to the interior most room without windows.  It's usually a bathroom.  A lot of people say get in the bathtub.  When I was in East Texas for college, they taught us not to because the tile is the first thing to break free.  You want to be near it in the event of needing shelter, but not inside it.   We also have a small "Oh $*^&" kit under the sink.  It has a candle/matches, small radio and flash light in it :P  We are both super careful though as we have both lost homes to them in the past. :(

We just had rain, hail and strong winds too. I did see a small funnel though... First time for that. My third floor apartment doesn't have a single interior room or closet. It has a lot of windows too. The only thing I can think of is a closet but it isn't in a safe area. I've been told It would be better for me to go downstairs under the outside staircase because it's protected... That just seems really scary to me. The only thing I can add to the above advice is that in a bad tornado they suggest using a mattress over you if you can... Here's hoping we never experience that!

I think the next time I talk to the people in the office, I will ask them what we should do. But I definitely decided tonight that I am making an emergency kit for the new apt. Because the sirens started going off and FI handed me the flashlight as I scooped Copper up to get in the bathtub..and I checked the Flashlight...and dead batteries.

One of our friends works at the Fry's in Irving and she was so spooked. I felt bad for her.
But apparently there's more coming...I think it's hard to tell whats coming and going on the news radar.

No tornados in Grapevine, but sirens going off everything enough so to make me get in the bathroom! Of course my FI is out of town so I ran down to my dad's...ugh!! Funny on your "silly" question, we were talking about this while I was out my dad's because in my FI and I's house, we don't have a room that in truly "interior" and without windows except for our half bath...I'll keep my fingers crossed I don't have to experience this again!! I'm not gonna lie, I was scared!

There is a second band of storms forming west of FTW heading on the same basic path as the first set.

I am still sitting in Albert's building playing solitaire on my phone and munching on vending machine snacks.  It's pretty exciting... /sarcasm

Fi was telling me about some houses that are called IFC or ICF..they have brick exteriors and then instead of 2x4s underneath its 6 inches of concrete. Apparently, someone took a 2x4 and shot it at the house at 200 mph, and just damaged the brick.
That's what I want on my house! :)

I figured it would be silly, just because I felt like I should know the answer to it. I'm actually kind of glad that alot of people don't. I feel less silly.

No joke. I've lived here my whole life, and I think tonight was the first time I saw hail with my own eyes.

I was like "eh whatever" until 50 softballs fell out of the sky.  That's when I got a bit tense.

We're in Carrollton and we didn't even get hail, at least none that we could hear. I did make FI and our 2 cats go sit in our bathroom and closet area for a while when the sirens went off though.

We're on the 2nd floor too, we have a garage and indoor stairs, so we could get to the bottom floor if we sat either in my car in the garage or under the staircase in the garage, but I don't feel that the garage is any safer than the bathroom and closet.

This was only the second time in my life I've ever heard a tornado siren go off! I'm in Ft W. There was one sighted a couple of miles from me, but I don't think we were in its path at all. TBH I'm not sure why the siren went off here -- that spooked me a bit.

We have no good place to go if a tornado actually hits. I think we decided on DH's tiny, tiny little closet because it's the only place without windows/tons of mirrors.

The house we're renting is basically falling apart already, so I don't have a lot of confidence in it in severe weather.

I was in Alrington. The "middle" of the storm for a while. My sister and I were sitting infront of the TV watching the Bulls game. My dad walked to the Jack-in-the-box to get food and we just went to bed. I guess you could say we didn't do to much about it either. Great game though!

Stupid effing grapefruit sized hail.... grrr....

Is it sad that I don't want to report the hail damage just yet?  I'd rather wait it out a few weeks because I'm sure there's more coming.

This.  I was supposed to have a happy hour last night, and apparently they cancelled it, but didn't bother to let anyone know.  So I called the girl and she was like, "We figured no one would want to go in a tornado!"  I was like, "WHERE ARE THERE TORNADOS?  OKLAHOMA!"
