Let's have a friendly debate, shall we?

Re: Let's have a friendly debate, shall we?

  • gee, i remember posing this question before. i am against the death penalty. if it's wrong to kill, then it's wrong to kill.

granted we have a messed up judicial system that needs fixing. meaning if  life sentence is handed out, it should mean just that.

if a criminal killed a loved one, yes i would want to kill that person myself, but of course i would not. that is what sets me apart from the killer.

as a society, we need to stand apart from the criminal and fix our judicial system and sentencing guidelines.

  • What the hell, I just posted and it showed up on a thread about plus sized BMs on Wedding party.  Okkkk.

Very well put, Rho and BGB.

Also, of course all prisons are different, but no matter what, max security and especially solitary confinement don't strike me as someplace I'd like to be no matter what.  Even if I got meals paid for and could watch TV.
  • .... and i'll probably get flamed for this, but i think it's gutless to wait to respond to a poll, unitil you hear the consensus...... your opinion is your opinion. period. people need to get a back bone!....Yell
  • Are you talking about me?  Because I said I was going to wait until people got started?  Because I did that because of my strong opinions, so as not to discourage people that disagree with me from posting.
  • I am way late to this and didn't read every post but I'm curious JK, you said you've studied this in school a lot. Do you know an estimated cost for an execution? I'm in Texas and I know that it costs 20K  a year, per inmate for meals, room and board, and that type of stuff. FWIW, I too am an old fashioned Texan in that I am for the death penalty, but I think being put on death row should last a week at maximum not years.

  • mnj, it varies from state to state.  I don't know the numbers off the top of my head, no, and I'm about to head out the door here, but I will look for you later and post here or PM you.  I fully believe in backing up what I say with evidence, so I didn't want you think I was ignoring you, I just can't look right at the moment :)
  • That's fine! I'm here everyday. mostly lurking, so I know good and well you wouldn't go around saying things that don't have the slightest truth to them.

I haven't read the whole thread, but I will say that I actually did a little happy dance at work the day Virginia executed the DC sniper.

Of course, I knew two of his victims, so I may be a little biased.

Edit:  I guess you would say that I am "for"
Holy Crap. We survived the first year!

  • MyNameIsNot, I know that the death penalty is not allowed for child molestation. You misunderstood the intention of my comment which is understandable. I used my roomate's father as an example because he lives there, which is how I know about the place, and that is his particular conviction. That said, many of his fellow inmates ARE convicted of murder, and they receive the same orchard views, the same access to horticulture classes, and the same college campus layout. I know this is far from the only prison in the country like this, and what makes me sick is that all of us pay taxes to allow these people to live in far better conditions than many innocent people, and far better than they deserve.
My view point would probably be different if these people were not treated as if they live in a hotel. If they were not provided with so many priveleges and amenities that many innocent, hard working people can not afford, and if these luxuries were not being paid for out of our taxes.
