do you ever take your ring off?

Normally when i get home from work one of the first things i do is take my engagement ring off. I get home from work late and so generally my time at night is spent either cooking or cleaning, then i take a shower and go to bed. FI told me last night that it hurts him that i take my ring off at all, he even wants me to sleep with it on! i told him no way, my ring is still a little too big on me and i don't want it to come off in my sleep. He said he just loves to see me wearing the ring and it makes him sad that i take it off so much. Truly the only reason i take it off is because i don't want it to get all gooped up while cooking and cleaning. i LOVE my ring i just didn't want it to get hurt. Now that i know he feels this way iI'm going to just leave it on at home and be extra careful with it. Just was curious if you girls keep yours on while you do chores or take it off

Re: do you ever take your ring off?

  • I take mine off if I'm going to be touching yucky things while I cook. If I'm cleaning, I really only take it off if I'm doing the bathrooms. Too many places for it to go down the drain! If I'm vaccuuming or dusting, I don't take it off. I also take it off when I shower, but I put it back on as soon as I'm out.

[QUOTE]I take off all my jewelry as soon as I get home and like pp, it doesn't go back on until the morning or if we go out somewhere at night.  I don't like wearing jewelry while cooking, cleaning, working out, sleeping, showering so it stays in my jewelry box when I'm home.  To be honest, I really don't understand people who wear their rings all the time.  I don't see the purpose of wearing a ring in the shower or while sleeping especially.

    **This.

I am so crazy about my ring.. It's perfect.. And it doesn't bother me at all to keep it on.. But when I first got my ring it was palladium.. My ring's band is made of diamonds and when i first got engaged I left it on at all times.. That is until i realized that while I was sleeping and had my hand under my pillow it was putting pressure on the ring and bent the band.

The jewelry company stopped making my ring in palladium and only have it in white gold and stronger metal because the fact that the band is thin. It is STRONG now, but I think part of me is still freaked out that that happened that I am extra cautious with it..

That and the fact that I don't want to wear it during the 4 S's (Shower, Swim, Sweat, Sex).
  • I rarely rarely take it off. I cook a lot and still don't take it off then, I just take care to get any gunk that got in it off after I'm done cooking. I sleep and shower in it. I haven't been swimming since I got engaged, but I'll take it off to go swimming. That's about it though. I feel weird when I take it off.

  • If it bugs your FI shouldn't that matter?  I wouldn't take it off if it was going to bother him

  • There are a few instances when I take mine off:

    - showering
    - swimming
    - painting
    - really messy baking or cooking (i.e. making cake balls, which totally coat my hands in crumbs and frosting)

FI bought me a chain to put the ring on when I started taking painting classes, so I use that if I'm going out and don't want the ring on my hand, but still want it with me.  At home, it stays on the shelf under the bedroom lamp when it's not on, so it's not in any danger of being knocked down a drain and I always know where it is.

I think it would be one thing if you didn't want to wear it going out (like if you still wanted to appear single or something), but I think it's a little silly for him to be hurt that you don't wear it around the house.  It's an engagement ring, not a security collar.

This is a belated married bio, with no reviews yet because I'm lazy.

  • I only take mine off when I go to sleep at night and when I'm applying lotion so it doesn't get all yicky. I work out with on.. shower with it on.. clean with it on.. etc...
  • Nope.
I don't know anyone who takes their ring on and off.
    Might be a regional thing.
Here, we just wear plastic gloves to clean the tub/shower/stovetop and leave the ring on.
  • After talking to my jeweler and them explaining to me how harsh every day chemicals can be, I take them off as soon as I get home and don't put them back on unless we go out.

It's an expensive piece of jewelry.  I'd rather take it off when I'm at home than ruin it.
  • I agree with lots of pp.  I take my ring off if I'm doing a messy task, such as baking, cooking, or doing dishes.  I also take my ring off before bed, and then put it back on right after my shower which is the first thing I do.
  • You're supposed to take your ring off when you're cooking.  Oils and heat are no good for metals and stones (the former a reason for you not to wear it when you're putting on lotion).  You'll find your ring needing a cleaning more often than if you take it off before cook.
You really oughta take it off when you're cleaning.  As a PP said, you couldn't possibly imagine how harsh chemicals you use everyday are on that ring.

Us?  We got tattoos (kind of an inside joke).  He can't seem to place ANY damn thing he touches and I'm one of those girls that won't take a ring off (I've had one on for six YEARS).  So I'm never taking my "ring" off, haha.
  • hey everyone!

Thank you so much for the responses. I'm glad i wasn't the only person who takes their ring off at home. I was starting to feel like a bad FI =(
I'm going to keep it on more at home now that i know it hurts his feelings but if i'm cleaning or cooking ill take it off and just put it back on when I'm all done =)
  • I don't wear my e-ring or wedding ring at home.  If there's a day that I'm just sitting at home all day and not going out, then they stay in the jewelry box.  It doesn't bother FI one bit, just as long as I put them on before we go out!

I think I might be allergic to the the coating that makes white gold, they tend to make me itch if I have them on for long periods of time.  But even if they didn't I would probably still keep them off at home.

  • I keep my ring on most of the time but am careful not to keep it on while cleaning or when I'm cooking and handling raw meat.  Would hate for my ring to be a breeding ground for E Colli.

I would discuss thing with your FI.  You don't want to hurt his feelings so I would discuss cleaning and showering as times to put away.  Also if you have a necklace you could put your ring on your necklace, which is what i do when I'm cleaning.
  • I take mine off when I get home and I only put them on again if I'm going out.  Mine do fit properly so I'm not concerned with losing them or damaging them but it is just my habit; I take all my jewelry off when I get home.

DH doesn't care (and he almost never wears his band) and I really wouldn't care if he was bothered by me taking mine off.  He isn't the one that wears them.  Besides, we don't need rings as a constant symbol of our marriage when we are sitting on the couch watching TV.

I take mine off for bootcamp in the morning, because I don't want to scratch it on the asphalt, and when I swim because I don't want to lose it. Biking or running, it stays on. I shower and cook with it on. I don't really clean a lot, so I don't worry about it then ;) But then again I also leave my earrings in for days and usually only change them when I lose one of them. Maybe you don't want to take advice from me.

If you are worried about it being too big, they make little things that attach to the underside of the ring to help it fit better. My mind just blanked on what they are called.

ETA: I also have a horrible memory and always lose/misplace things. If I took it all off when I got home, I'd forget to put it back on. And I don't see a problem with keeping it on at all. If im cleaning with some chemical, then I wear gloves anyway because my skin is sensitive.

  • Kristin, it isn't a regional thing, please.

I grew up "in the South" as you claim to be from; I've lived in Iowa for only 2 years.

I am taking care of my fingers and my jewelry.

  • I take mine off for weight lifting, messy cooking (especially doughs) and I should take it off when cleaning. But I sleep in my ring and and wear it in the shower.
  • Mine still doesn't fit me (we just haven't gotten around to getting it sized yet), so I have  ring guard on it. But the downside to having that ring guard is that everything gets stuck in it. So I'm actually not wearing it right now, because I was cleaning & packing earlier. I usually take it off to shower, put on lotion, etc.
I wear it to bed though. I actually can't sleep without it on. I went to bed last night right after my shower, and realized that I had left it in the bathroom, and I couldn't relax and sleep until I went to get it and put it on.
  • Agree, it is perfectly normal to take your ring off.

  • I take my engagement ring off for cleaning and messy cooking. And showering and putting on lotions or sanitizers. I sleep in mine though, because my fingers swell in the mornings and I wouldn't be able to get it back on for the day if I took it off at night.
  • I take mine off to clean and garden.  I also take it off the last thing before I go to bed and don't put it on until I am done showering and doing my hair.

  • I usually take my ring off once I get home from work and put it in my jewelry box. It stays there until the next morning or if we go out. My FI actually wants it that way, he is extremely anal about my ring, because before he proposed he accidently dropped it on a tile floor and one of the diamonds on the band popped out (my ring's band is a pave setting, so I have a bunch of little diamonds on the band) and that really freaked him out and it also made me very cautious of it as well.

I have worn it while cleaning and gardening, but I always wear gloves when I'm doing this, so it's protected. I don't wear it while I shower or sleep. I feel asleep in it once and my FI woke me up to take it off (told you he was anal)

If you FI is really upset with you about it, I would just explain to him why you take it off. You want to protect it and don't want it to get ruined. Once my FI told me why he wants me to take it off, I understood his concern and have done what he asked. But once he gets his wedding band, he will not be able to wear it much due to his work, and after he explained to me why he wasn't going to wear his band at work (the chances of the ring getting caught in equipment is too great), I was completely fine with it.
  • I don't ever take mine off. If it gets dirty or something in it I have it cleaned. You should have it cleaned and inspected every so often anyway. He bought it for you to wear...
  • I don't take mine off, but it's small and doesn't get in the way. I chose it specifically for that. I would say to just make sure you choose a wedding band that you do not have to take off while cooking and cleaning. I think it would make your to-be husband feel better.

Also, make sure he knows that you love the ring and just don't want to damage it.
  • I take mine off when handling raw meats and doughs that get all over my hands and gunk them up.  If I'm just making something that doesn't involve me touching it stays on.  But in the shower and swimming and sleep it comes off too but my FI knows that i take off everything including earrings.  A lot of people leave theirs on in the gym but it feels completely weird as I'm all sweaty and it feels like it's just going to fall off and I won't know it.  My FI understands and doesn't me to possibly ruin or lose my ring.  Often he jokes that it should go in a box and never come out so it stays new, yeah so NOT going to happen
