Aveda Beauty School for hair/make-up?

Has anyone used Aveda Beauty School for either up-dos, make-up, or manicure/pedicures?

They look like a cost-effective option ($40 for hair + $28 for make-up -- both include trial).

i've used aveda for regular things--haircuts, waxing, etc. and it's hit or miss. it really depends on the person working on you--remember they are all students so you really want to get the "best in the class". also, if you do your trial there and love it, make sure you book the actual day with the SAME person.

I know this isn't your question, but I used Paul Mitchell School for hair for my tea ceremony.

It was great service except that it took 2 hours.  The student had to come with a plan of attack, was very careful, and then had a teacher "grade" her.  But I couldn't have been happier about the result.  The cost was great, too, only $12 for Phase I and $20 for Phase II students.  I just had to be very patient.  Also, I was able to go this route for my tea ceremony because the event was later in the afternoon.  Paul Mitchell only opens at a certain time.

I imagine Aveda isn't too much different.

If you are on an early or tight schedule, you may want to hire a student who's off that day to come to your place.

I also wouldn't eliminate pros.  Some pros aren't that much more expensive, like Michelle Marx, who quoted me $50 for my hair.  Michelle is an alumna of Aveda Beauty School, I think.  And they wouldn't take nearly as long per person.

I think that your wedding is a time to not have to deal with stress and this would stress me out. I know the importance of having someone who has done weddings do your hair and makeup. I have been a bridesmaid in many weddings where they dont really do a great job since they dont know the skills to get some of the longer lasting looks. Also remember - makeup is something that you will not want to fuss with and the photographers will appreciate a quality makeup artist to eliminate most fixes on the back end. Certain makeup will tend to look grey vs. natural color. Its worth looking into.

I agree with kelklump.  Even though I'm on a heavy budget since FI and I are both students, we decided not to go to a beauty school to get my hair and make-up done because of the stress I went through on the day of my tea ceremony.  Being on schedule on your wedding day is so important.

I would suggest to see if you could just have your hair done by them for a regular night and see what you think.  Then force your FI to take you out. :p

I used the Aveda school in Cleveland for years.  I let them do anything except my brows because if they screwed that up I was screwed.  Most of the time everything was great but there were a couple of times I was driving straight to a real salon to have something fixed.

As much as I loved some of the students, no way no how would I have let them near my hair for about 6 months before my wedding nor would I trust them to do the makeup on the day of.  After 6 years of going there, I only ever had one student doing the makeup touchup who did not make me look like a drag queen.

You might try seeing how much an established Aveda salon is.  I've been getting my hair done at Ambience Salon and Spa in West Chester for years and all the stylists there are really good.  Plus they have WONDERFUL makeup artists.  Their wesite is http://www.ambiencesalonspa.com/index.php?page=Hair .  Good luck!
