Sleeves on a hot day?

Ok, we are seriously considering moving our wedding up to the summer time (from fall) because doing so would allow us to take a week long honeymoon abroad instead of a three day honeymoon in-state. We just found out that my fiancé’s work would allow him to do that, so we’re switching gears a little bit in the attire department.

I have to have partial sleeves on my dress (religious requirement) that is currently strapless. A bolero jacket is fine, and I was actually going to wear an everyday blue cardigan since our wedding is very informal and it was in the fall.

Now I’d just cook myself wearing something like that. So I need a bolero/cardigan made out of a different, cooler material, but I’m not sure which material would be best for a hot day. I would love if it didn’t really show sweat too much… I was thinking lace, but I really wanted a color one…

Any suggestions? Thanks!

Re: Sleeves on a hot day?

  • I am not a fan of it, but since you want color, what about colored lace?  Not sure what color you were looking for exactly but see pic below for an idea...

  • The knit lace I own like in Maggie's picture is almost as warm as a cotton knit. I'd recommend tying a satiny shawl around/over your shoulders for the ceremony.
  • I think you'll see more lightweight options coming available as the spring clothes start coming in.
Whoever said it was supposed to be happily ever after is a big fat liar.
  • Is your wedding and ceremony indoors?  If so, I wouldn't worry too much about the weight (I mean you don't want a wool jacket) of the shrug because the A/C will be your friend that day.

Oh, and have you spoken to a seamstress?  They may be able to offer suggestions of appropriate fabric that is light weight and allows your body to breathe.

  • linen fabrics can be cool and fresh during the hot summer. it can also absorb sweat and dry fast.
  • If you get a chiffon jacket, that would give you coverage and let a breeze through.

  • I didn't think of linen! I've looked for chiffon and I haven't really found anything that I like, but it might just be a matter of looking harder. I did find one lace one that I liked with mid upper-arm sleeves, and I would just be concerned that they wouldn't be quite long enough and that it might not have enough coverage for the front. It can be sent back though.

The wedding is outdoors, but it's in the morning, under shade/tents and casual, so those things should help. We're still not sure if it's going to be in late may, june or july.  We'll find out today. I'm kind of hoping not july, but we're changing the date 8 months out and we're lucky that our venue has so many days open still. Just have to get the photographer lined up with the venue now.
  • Also, at first I was going to have my seamstress put sleeves on it, but then I decided to go with the cardigan and kind of forgot about her making big alterations like that.
But maybe I could ask her to make me a little bolero out of linen. That way it would nice and cool and I could still have my color! That's a good idea!
