Saturday Chat

Re: Saturday Chat

  • Daddy came over today and we worked some more on the new archway. We didn't get it finished, but the crossbeam is up:

Eventually, we'll be drywalling in the sides and putting these columns on the pieces that jut out from each side:

Obviously I need to put them back together, but that thing's doing pretty well for something made in the 1870s that was brought to Tennessee from Colorado, haha. Before we can anchor the sides, we have to put in a section of the laminate that we're using for the room once this godawful carpet gtfos. So... this project is definitely a process. It's the largest one we have besides the whole finishing out the garage thing.

My family would have those "Family Game Nights", and if the power went out or something, my dad would always get one of those old, clunky, battery powered fluorescent lamps (we had them for when we would go camping) and we would gather around it with a stack of board games and get lost in them for hours.

Same here. We always played cards and board games when relatives came to visit. Whenever we had thunderstorms, my parents would distract us by pulling out a game. We did the same thing with the battery-powered lamps. :)

Coming from a runner, cotton is actually the devil when working out.  It holds in moisture instead of wicking it away.  Socks made out of mostly synthetic material are your best bet for no blisters.   I like to run with balega (they're pricey though), but you can find cheaper versions.   Body glide or something like aquafor over a blister can help decrease friction so you can keep going.

    Good luck.

A really GOOD sports bra.  I read a quote somewhere that said sports bras shouldn't have birthdays.  So replace them often and make sure you get the right ones for the right 'impact'.  I have ones that really smoosh my girls down for when I run ( I can't stand to have any jiggle) and much lighter elastic one for pilates/barre.  It makes a big difference.  They will be pricey, but worth every single cent paid.

And if you are thinking about running a lot, I would recommend getting fitted for shoes.  A reputable running store will put you on a treadmill and watch your gate and landing.  They will then help you find a shoe that works best for you.   Mall stores can't do that.  I would say its a must for women because lots of us tend to have IT band issues and overpronate, and a simple fitting can help a lot of this.

I'm really picky about what I work out in though, too.  I spend way too much on clothes, but I justify the spend in making myself then go workout and wear them.  I like anything with wicking material in it.  Especially Dri-Fit from Nike or Luon from Lululemon both are killers on the wallet.  You don't have to spend a lot though can get quality in the Champion versions from Target though, too.

    Hope that helps!

No worries!  I had to learn the hard way and after many blisters later I was introduced to my balegas at running store here in Chicago.  They even have a sign in the store that says "Cotton is Rotton".  I was like, what is that about.  Who knew?    I will never go back to the dark side!

I like this idea. I'm sitting here thinking what I want to eat for dinner, and am having trouble because I am low on my gluten-free quick meal stock, and don't feel like running to the store or cooking. (I've become addicted to Thai rice-noodle soups - and can eat 2 in one sitting. LOL) However, a bottle of wine, some cheese and crackers (GF ofc!) sounds like a pretty good meal. Ideally I would like to be watching Hunger Games, but I think Aladdin would work just fine.

    afaik, Woodchuck is all GF.

And I never buy GF quick meals because they're too expensive. I have lots of rice noodles, veggies, Bragg's, cashews and eggs to make my own stirfries. I also make my own bread because damn things are expensive. I thought they'd get cheaper as more people went GF, but, um, no.

My stirfry comes out chewy and tough, I burnedish a roast in my crockpot... yeah lets not get into those embarrassing details of my failure as a woman... *hangs head in shame*

My mom found a recipe for very tasty sourdough boules, so I make up the dough for that, let it ferment a few days and then make it into rolls. I usually get a couple dozen from each batch and use them for buns or just general bread. If I don't feel like doing the whole from scratch thing, I just make a loaf using the Pamela's basic bread mix. It tastes amazing and Tyler says it tastes like and is moist like regular bread.

I own a bread machine, but I never use it anymore. I didn't like the shape of the loaves -- I always had to get crafty with the way I cut them to make them acceptable for sammiches.

How long have you been GF? Are you celiac or just going GF?

Regarding Woodchuck - "Summer" is pretty good. It has a hint of blueberry in it and a slightly tart flavor. "Fall" and "Winter" are still my favorites, though. "Fall" tastes like apple pie, and "Winter" tastes like sweet wine.

I tested negative blood work for celiac, but a colonoscopy back in June of last year and biopsy showed the flattened villi and I then tested positive for celiac. I have been GF ever since. It has made a huge heck of a difference on my life and health, and I wish I'd known earlier that cutting gluten from my diet would make me feel so much better! I still consider myself "new" to GF because I feel there is so much I don't know, and I feel like I find new GF foods all the time. I'm probably not as worried about cross-contamination as I should be (I'll still order fries from fast food - Not McD-... or bunless burgers from In and Out) and I blame that on me being a horrible cook.

I like Pamela's. I bought some about a month or so ago, and it was pretty awesome. I was kind of impressed. Are you celiac or just GF? I'm probably going to pick your brains for GF suggestions and tips. :)  Oh and on a side note, I noticed that going GF has helped my IC too. Yay for GF living! LOL.

Try Crispin, I am absolutely in LOVE with that. To me it is more like a wine too, I buy the Brut, but I think they have a sweeter option if you like that. :)

Also, if anyone is interested, I just opened a Green's Dubbel Dark Ale - didn't realize I had this, I don't even know when I bought it - but holy cow, this is NOMMY! Closest thing I've had to real beer in a LONG time! Drinkin' it from a frozen mug and all. I am in heaven! I guess I am officially KUI!

I just googled Green's Dubbel Dark Ale .... ouch.... it is $5.99 for a pint-sized bottle. OUCH! QQ

  • Celiac~

I'm glad that I'm a good cook or I'd be boned. We maintain different cooking surfaces in the house -- mine is demarkated by a Silpat. We have different pots and pans, I'm the only one who uses the toaster, my food's in a special drawer in the fridge. We don't eat away from the house a lot, but when we do, we only go to places that have a GF menu. I'm also allergic to pork and don't eat beef, so that kinda limits my choices. I'd kill for more GF veggie burger choices. Because of the broth in frozen chicken, I can't eat it (fuckin' gluteny broth, amirite), so my mom randomly leaves brothless chicken breasts in my freezer. She gets chicken on sale constantly. I have no idea how. She has like... chicken powers.

But yeah, if you want to pick my brain, feel free. Peek's also GF iirc.

We don't have different surfaces in the house, but that is because most everything is gluten free. My fridge is full of GF frozen goods like muffins, and pancakes, and waffles (my mom makes them for me and I freeze them) and meats and what not. FI has his loaf of wheat-bread, but he uses the pop-up toaster and I use the toaster-oven - for whatever reason I am paranoid about crumbs... perhaps because I can see them? Playing gluten roulette is something I know I should stop (read: ordering fries that might or might not be fried in the same oil as breaded things) and I actually have a deep fryer.... but disposing of oil is a pain!

So, since I am not a chef, let's take baby steps. What are some things I can get, and keep on hand, that I can toss together for a nice GF meal? That doesn't really require a lot of skill to make?

And wow, I can't imagine having more than GF limits on my meals, perhaps I should start to learn to feed myself.... just incase. I'd be boned too... I read about someone with a soy AND gluten issue. How horrible!

Your Mommy seems just awesome! I was suprised when I saw that broth had gluten in it... well, no, I was shocked at how many things had gluten in it... Jaw dropping!
