Vendor Reviews- July 29

Laura Ball/Boardwalk Catering A

I LOVE Laura!  Working with her for six months was fabulous, as she was always quick to communicate with me and made things as easy for us as possible.  She and her staff were amazing on the wedding day. She worked hard to make my wedding perfect even when she had to schedule major surgery for the very next day.  And she did it with a smile.

Brandon/Ohio Event Bartending D

Where to begin?  We booked them 10 or so months in advance, but communication really broke down the last two weeks.  During that time, it took six days for Brandon to answer an email from me and he did not call when he said he would to organize a time for us to drop off the alcohol.  On my wedding day, he did not have lemon and lime water available before the ceremony as previously discussed, and I had to ask him to add fruit to the water during the cocktail hour.  He couldn’t open the keg on the second type of beer, even though the distributor had no trouble with it when we took it back (full).  They made drinks that were not on the menu, causing us to need additional alcohol.  My husband ordered a signature drink (a mojito) that looked awful.  I would not hire them again under any circumstances.

Emilie Duncan/Emilie Duncan Event Planning A

We hired Emilie for Day-of Coordination, and she was great to work with.  She helped me during my small freakouts and worked hard to make sure everything was perfect.  She was there when my favorite flower arrangement broke before the ceremony started and she came up with a quick fix to make it look as awesome as possible.  When bartender Brandon did not return our phone calls she stepped up to take care of it.

Flowers on Springtree Lane A

Anne & Robin were great, and the only florists we interviewed.  They didn’t laugh at my very (very) small flower budget, but instead worked with me to get the most bang for my buck with what seemed like my best interests at heart, and not theirs.  They stepped in with ideas and follow-through when I had no vision for flowers from the beginning.

Rob/Team DJ  A

Rob was also the only DJ we interviewed.  We put a lot of faith in him and he definitely delivered.  He kept guests on the dance floor all night.  The only criticism I have is that the second to last song (which my husband and I chose) was not played; what was played instead, however, produced the best picture of the night, so I can’t fault him too much.  J

Anita Kline A

What hasn’t been said about Anita Kline?  From the first time you meet her she welcomes you into her house and is warm, friendly and professional.  Her cakes are gorgeous, tasty and economical.   She’s awesome.

Kelly Maughan B

Kelly is a super adorable gal and I do love her pictures, but I found that there were small things she could have done or directions she could have given that would have made our pictures SO MUCH better!  She might be great for someone else, but I think she was a little too photojournalistic for us- for some photos it would have been great to have her say, “No, you- stop squinting!” “Trade places with so-and-so.”  I didn’t get one picture with just my matron and me.  :(

Joyce Eubanks/Alterations on Lane A

I took a nontraditional dress I bought online to Joyce to see if she could make it happen, even though it was like 6 sizes too big.  She did what she could with it but in the end we decided I would go a more traditional route, and the idea of dress shopping really overwhelmed me.  Joyce talked me through the process and told me what I could look for that would work best for me.  She was right and I found the perfect dress, which she then altered.   I loved working with her so much she also did my husband’s suit and my mother’s dress.  I referred a girlfriend to her as well.  She practically became a member of my family.  She has some interesting communication styles though, so you do have to be persistent if you want to work with her.

Willy/Wendy’s Bridal A

I wasn’t so in to dress shopping (see above), but I found my dress at Wendy’s.  Willy was so genuinely happy (at least it seemed genuine) when I choose it that she gave me a big old hug!  She was great.

Vista Print A

We used VisaPrint for everything- STDs, invites, and now Thank Yous.  I loved all of it.

The Westin (Downtown) C

Oh, Westin.  How much I wanted this to work out.  I used hotelplanner.com to have hotels bid on my block (great website) and we chose The Westin.  Not a great choice at all.  I worked with Phil BeMiller, who was a very nice guy and always returned my emails promptly.  However, the didn’t hand out my meticulously created Welcome Bags (in fact, one guest got a Bag from another wedding), my mother’s suite had broken AC, and a host of other issues.  There were no doubles available for our block (though I had mandated them in the initial bid) so my friends who came together could not stay there.  They told us our block was booked when actually no one had booked a room (this was months before the wedding).  It was a freaking mess.  On the bright side, the rooms were gorgeous.  Our block was about $130/room (which made the problems even more pronounced)- but two friends Pricelined it a few days before the wedding and rooms for $60/night.

Wedding Bands A

Fabuluster from Etsy.  Our bands were really expensive, but they mean a lot to us since they have the other’s fingerprint and people keep commenting on how unique and interesting they are.  We love them.

Jos A Bank A

After talking with an employee who listened to what we wanted and pointed to a suit that was in our budget, we bought hubby’s suit from there.  We had Joyce Eubanks alter it.  The other fellas had no trouble (as far as I know) with the place, either.
