IUDs

I know this is a popular topic around here.  I got mine yesterday! I'm very excited, but when does this cramping go away (or at least get a little better)?  It's not fun.

Re: IUDs

  • Maybe you should ask your doctor...

  • I think it really depends on your body, if you've had kids, etc.

  • I only remember it that day and night.  I don't remember it continuing but maybe it did.  Probably better to ask your doctor if it hasn't gone away within a day or two.

  • I had cramping for a couple hours following the insertion (rather mild) but was fine the next day. From what I was told though, it is not unusual to have cramping for longer as your body is trying to expel what is a foreign body. It should settle down after a bit.

You may have more cramping during your menstrual period too as a result as your body will still think it has stuff to get rid off (fortunately, this has not been my experience)

Just be cautious if it continues for too lon, gets excessive/painful, or you start having a lot of bleeding as your body may be actually successfully expelling it. There are some women who end up finding they can't use IUD's as their bodies just don't want anything to do with it!
  • Well my doctor said that because I haven't had kids, the cramping could last a couple of days.  I was just looking for other experiences in hopes it would end quickly :)

  • I'm  without children, I cramped for about a week (TMI I also have a tiny uterus according to Dr). I have paraguard and still have cramps during my period. But recently they have been getting better, Feb will be the year mark. Aleve should be your friend right now.

  • I don't have children and I only cramped for about an hour or so and it was very mild. I  went straight from the insertion to work and was fine.

  • I just had my second period with an IUD, and the cramping was more severe than without one for the first two days, but now it's fine. As for the insertion, my cramping ended up lasting almost two weeks. Cry But, I also was getting close to my period too, but I think that might've been a combination of the two. Either way, it's not too bad if you keep yourself medicated, haha.
