Evening thread?

Re: Evening thread?

  • Meg, you're so close!

It slows down at the end a lot too. At least that was what happened for me. We're required to turn in our documents a week prior to defense, so I spent a week trying to figure out what the heck to do with myself. It was weird.
  • I love skype, between my sister in Fl and my parents in Buffalo its a lifesaver. My mom was watching my nephew (who holds a very special place in my heart) this weekend because his baby sister was being born, and we skyped twice. I then skyped with my sister and her 3 year old, who decided she wanted to skype with no clothes on haha.

When FI and I skype it really is sometimes just talking about nothing and doing nothing. It's just nice. We were supposed to skype today, but he ditched me. In fact, I haven't heard from him all day. weird. hrm.  oh well.

  • PhD in industrial engineering, you rock! The fi has a degree in Aerospace engineering, and I'm getting my B.S. in Mathematics. When we move next year I'll know what grad school I can apply to, so I can get my masters in math as well.
  • Opal - I've definitely been in and out this week.  How did your defense go?
  • You people and your math skills.

I can't wait to go back for my ph.d. Except, there is no school nearby that offers the program I want. The only online program I would consider requires some kind of religious referral. I don't have that.

  • ggirl - what do you want a Phd in?

And *wow* so many grad school and math-y knotties.
  • Awesome. I was crazy nervous, but I knew that I would be, and practiced at least once a day for the week leading up to it. So when the nerves kicked in, so did the experience of having done my presentation half a dozen times already. The questions I got were pretty simple and they only deliberated for about five minutes before passing me.

I still can't believe I'm done. I feel like any minute someone's going to remind me of some requirement I haven't fulfilled or some form that hasn't been signed.
  • Skype is amazing. I'm so thankful for technology... It makes me wonder what the  long-distance couples/military couples will have a couple generations down the road.

"You think you have it bad?! Back when your gran-daddy was in the Navy, we had to SKYPE if we wanted to talk! Horrible isn't it? Count your blessings, kiddos!" :P
  • Yep Skype is fantastic.  I skype with my parents, my aunts and little cousins, my Godson, my friends.  I love it!

It's funny though, H and I were long distance the whole time we dated, up until the wedding.  We were only 2 hours apart, and would text all the time and always call before bed, but we never once Skyped.  Neither of us really knew about it then.  While he was deployed we got to Skype from 2 of the ports, once of which was on Christmas morning so that was awesome.  The time change is always hard to manage though.  When they were in SIngapore I had to stay up til 2am to Skype with him, but of course it was worth it.

Also, as much as I like Kay's (as I just said in the other thread Ggirl), I want to write them to complain about their commercial where the guy skypes from the ship.  There is no skyping on ships, and that commercial is BS.

  • CONGRATS, Opal.

And welcome to the world of free time, I hope.
  • yaaay for nerdy brides :)
I can't wait to just... sit in a lab crunching numbers all day.
  • Heh. We'll see. I still owe a couple of papers, but they're going to be largely cut-and-paste jobs from my thesis. I hope.
  • Beachy-yeah I get up early or weird times to skype. the one time we hadn't talked in a while and it was like 3am on a Friday night for me so I was up skyping. Since he is 13 hrs ahead, I find that mornings work best for us, especially now that he is working days.

I skyped xmas morning with my sister so I could see my nieces open up their presents from me. It really has been a great thing to utilize.

I never even thought about the commercial, but you're right I would guess skyping from a ship is impossible.

  • Meg-I want a ph.d in Counselor Education. I want to be able to teach at the college level. My undergrand is in education, my masters in counseling. I feel like it would combine everything that I love.
    image
  • hmm... that's strange dnbeach. FI skyped me last night from the wardroom on the ship.
  • Well the type of internet they can access and the sites they can access are limited depending on what areas they are in.  So while in hazardous areas they are very limited in access.

  • ggirl - that's really cool.  Are there many schools with a program in Counselor Education?
  • Beachy, I was just randomly reading the Niagara Falls police blotter (I used to do it all the time at work, it was a great way to find out where your clients are) and did you know there is a regional unit named and I quote: "Regional Police Service Guns, Gangs and Grows Unit"

    Really, that's the name??
    image
  • Hahaha that's pathetic.  When I used to work at that pizza place, all the cops would come in for their lunch and I used ot hear lots of fun stories.  One of my best friends is a cop now, and several of H's good friends too.

Man Ggirl, I wish you started posting a while ago, we definitely could have met when I went home last Christmas.
    imageBabyFruit Ticker
  • Yeah one of my coworkers husband is a cop. We would hear everything and it ususally involved a current/former/soon to be client haha.

I know that would have been awesome! Damn my lurking!!  Now we will probably never be home at the same time. Make a trip to warm weather!

Meg-University of South Carolina Columbia campus has one, but thats about 3 hrs from me. That's the only one I can find in South Carolina, or even close by in Ga. Soooo I don't know what I'm going to do.

Ok, time for me to go to bed. Good night ladies. See you tomorrow evening since I can't knot during the day anymore :(

  • dnbeach- Yeah I definitely figured as much. I was just pointing out that it's possible, since we skyped while he was on the boat and in the flightsuit like the commercial depicted.
  • Popping in late once again ladies... hallooooo

Nasty storms here tonight, whole front yard/driveway/walkway is flooded at my parent's house. On the plus side, all of this rain should make any rain-related issues evident in the inspection on Tuesday.

Feeling really bad for everyone in Joplin right now. Mother nature is not happy this year...
  • :( Glad you're safe and dry...

    Hi everyone!

I'm trying to make red wine risotto.  Ever since kjb mentioned that she makes it, I've been wanting to try.
  • That sounds really good mica.

  • Ciara I was just looking at birthday on FB, and I realized that you and H have the same birthday.

  • It's a good day to be born. We skipped yesterdays Sounders match because I wanted to be able to go to Wednesdays match and celebrate. I thought 2 matches in 5 days was going to be a little much for both Edmund and I.

Edmund sounds like quite the trooper (or the youngest Sounders fan!).
  • I've never had risotto... they had it at the reception we went to last night (the groom is a chef), but I was too chicken to try anything because I didn't know which dish was what and was too embarassed to ask. haha
  • He did great at the first game we took him to. I just spent most of the game feeding him because his schedule got all messed up and was taking 2 ounces every hour or so instead of 4 ounces every 3-4 hours. We are going to plan Wednesday a little better so that we all can enjoy the match.
