Since most of you hated CDs as a favor, do you like...

FI and I are trying to choose things that are important to us or just say "us" for wedding stuff. FI is a chef. So for favors do you like either of these:

1. Small potted herbs. Can also be used as reception decor and then taken home. Guests hopefully think of us when they use the herbs to cook...

2. Candy buffet with Jelly Belly candies and "recipe" cards to try, such as 2 popcorn beans and 1 caramel bean= caramel covered popcorn

  • I think 2 is a great idea.  I always like doing this when I get the big bags of Jelly Belly's.

  • BOTH!!! depending on where you get the supplies for both, it wouldnt cost an incredible amount. You have no bio so I have no idea what youre doing for centerpieces but you could pot the herbs as a centerpiece and have a sign for everyone to take one.

We used the small potted herbs for our favours and got LOTS of positive feedback. Not just 'oh the herbs are cute' sort of feedback, but rather, being shown how the herbs are growing when we go to visit our guests, being cooked food using the herbs etc. They were far more well-received than we anticipated, even.

One thing I will say: Make sure you source your herbs early (eg. order them in from the store if you're purchasing them from one) and be prepared to go shopping for the herbs and put them together at the last minute (eg. the day before). Make sure that if you have to transport them they stay hydrated during the day. I collected port glasses from thrift stores which we used with name tags which my H designed for our guests, doubling as placecards.

We were going to name our tables after the herbs, but in the end some died (we bought some a week beforehand- bad idea) and we couldn't source all of the types we needed, so we just used table numbers instead.

  • I like both of these ideas, either would be cute.
  • I am fairly new and don't know how to make a bio with a link like most of you have? Plus, I have no idea what my centerpieces will look like yet either! Still working on EVERYTHING.

All I know is our colors will likely be Ivory/Cream, Espresso, and either Sage or Moss green. I'd also like some nature elements like birch bark wrapped vases or candles and moss or wheat grass used in some way.

Any suggestions are great at this point. Thanks!

  • My colors were ivory, tan and sage. We did a potted planters as our centerpiece and people took them home at the end of the night. The one my mom took is still alive a year and a half later! We also got a lot of compliments and it didnt cost a lot - my aunt had them made at a wholesale greenhouse and apparently paid 110$ for 10 tables.

Suns idea is TOTALLY cute, but I like mine too :)

Here is a pic of how our centerpieces looked on the table.
  • What sort of plants did you use nebb? Yours is cute.

(but I like mine too! ;P)

I love anything green and leafy (but not overbearingly so) on white linen. So pretty.

  • very cute. I can't get close enough to see what the pots are like though. I was thinking of using little clay pots. my friend is a painter and said as our gift she could paint them however we wanted too.

how many did you both have? one for every guest, one for every couple, or something else?

  • Mine are concrete rectangular planters with a scroll design on them. I am not sure the flowers but there was ivy, ferns and a white flowering plant.

I had one per table with a little sign saying "please take me home" and left it up to the people at the table to decide who took it - none were left. I also had a candy buffet as well and it was empty at the end fo the night.
  • I had one for every guest. We had 70 guests so it wasn't a lot, and they were quite cheap to buy.

    I used port glasses. Here's a link to a bigger picture: http://photos-f.ak.fbcdn.net/hphotos-ak-snc3/hs024.snc3/11162_183817831319_541001319_3783787_8039593_n.jpg

I've seen them done in small clay pots and they look adorable. I wouldn't have known where to source those from, though, and my decor involved lots of vintage glass elements, thus the port glasses (which were very cheap from thrift shops).

  • Here's some inspiration ideas for you for the claypots:

Even though I'm totally biased, I love the herb idea and think it's super cute!

  • We only had 80 guests. We had other flowers around the room in mason jars as well, with glass stones. Suns wedding was prettier though ;)
  • I'm loving the herbs idea.  I would be the person that would tell people I'd take their's if they didn't want them, because I love to cook and there's nothing better than fresh herbs.  I also know that some people are incapable of figuring out what to do with fresh herbs, so I'd be more than happy to avail them of the plants.

I'd like that more than the jelly beans because they last longer.  You could include little recipe tags for a favorite dish using the specific herb, like tomato sauce with oregano plants, roasted pork with rosemary plants, caprese salad with basil plants, ect.  I'd eat that up (pun intended).

  • Pfft!! your wedding was on a popular blog, its frigging gorgeous and probably stopped time and space by being so cute/beautiful/fantastic.

I assure you that my photog was almost entirely to blame (eg. 99.9999%) for any wonderment that may have arisen from my wedding photos!

AND where is your married blog, young miss (mrs)?

  • It died unfortunately after the boobshelf incident. I might resurect it with decor and ceremony pics, but im lazy. I havnt even done my wedding album yet a year and a half later. :(
  • The knot tells me it's 99 days since our wedding... we are yet to print out one single picture from the day. I keep saying I'm going to but I just haven't chosen where to put them or which ones I want.

I can't even choose my signature picture, how on earth am I supposed to figure out which wedding pictures to have printed?!

  • I personally would like either of those favors.
  • PS: Nebb, I meant to say, you should resurrect your bio. I was just facebook stalking you and you have lots of pretty pictures that should be shared!
  • Aww thanks :) it exists kind of but I disabled all of the pages. I will hopefully tweek it some day and get it back out there. I hate admitting it but ive lost interest in AWing my wedding.
  • I may totally steal Sun's idea of doing herbs in port glasses.  Hope you don't mind?  We've been trying to think of something to do for favours that would also look decent on the table.  This would work well.

I don't mind. Initially I was going to do eggcups (because vintage eggcups are so cute!) but port glasses were much easier to locate at thrift stores and so very cheap as well- plus they fit with the vintage mismatched vases I used as centerpieces. I put hessian in before the soil/plant, which worked well.

PS: My H says that if anyone else is going to use this idea, make sure that you get a little water spray bottle and spray the plants throughout the day regularly so that they don't wilt. Ours held up well all things considered, but they did have to be rescued mid-way through the day (before the ceremony) by H's uncle using a water spray bottle.
