  Fi and I have had many, many conversations about this.  We have decided that we will have 1 joint account for house hold bills, going out to dinner, etc.  And each of us will have a seporate account for our own discressionary spending....and we will keep about $500 each in those accounts.  The way we look at it, we should not have to ask the other or tell the other for little things...like going to lunch with co-workers, or stopping to get a cup of coffee in the mroning.  But n the other hand, large purchases need to be done jointly (as in, he is not going to walk in was a brand new 50 inch TV, or me with a brand new fridge).  We are currently doing this now...and it works for us.
