We registered for and got a full set of Macy's Hotel Collection sheets and towels. We've been using them for a month, and already the pillowcases and towels are starting to bleach out really obviously. They're a pale blue color, and they already have orangey spots on them. We haven't used any bleach on them and don't use any toiletries that are particularly harsh that would make this happen.

They weren't cheap, so I'm obviously kind of pissed. Can you return stuff you've been using for a month? Has anyone else had this happen?

What do you mean orangy spots? My H's skin leaves a kind of oil on pillow cases and it's annoying, but it's him not the sheets. My friend's husband's skin does the same thing. Could it be that? Or has it never happened with any other sheets?

If you really know it's the sheets themselves, I would call Macy's and ask them. Some stores will take something back if you're unhappy with it even if you've used it.

I mean, the color on them is bleaching out. It looks like there are bleach spots on the pillowcases and towels--they're there even after we wash them.

Our old sheets were white, so we have no basis for comparison really. Our old cheap towels didn't, though.

When I was using ProActiv as a teenager, it left spots on clothing, towels and pillowcases if I wasn't super, super careful about rinsing it about 80 times. Either of you use any skin products like that?

If not, Macy's is good about that stuff. I would take them in. Maybe a copy of your registry to show that they ARE a recent acquistion. They might refuse to do anything, but that's unlikely.

Hmm that is really strange. You're sure that neither of you accidentally got bleach on them or in the washing machine?

I agree with TJ. I would just take them and my registry to the Macy's customer service counter and try to get it sorted out.

TJ, I actually used to use ProActiv but stopped right before the wedding because it was drying my skin out. I'm using some St. Ives green tea face wash now or something, and DH is basically a soap and water guy.

I might call their registry hotline and see if they have any advice. I just hate that the new stuff is getting ruined so quickly, you know?

I would definitely try to return them. I know exactly what you're talking about, we have the same problem with our light blue sheets. I NEVER use bleach so I know it's not something I did.

It never hurts to try returning to them but it may just be the oils in your skin. Andy and some of his siblings do the same things to towels. We registered for solid chocolate and solid white towels just for the sake of him not bleaching everything (he gets white only lol). It sucks but I'd hate for you to get new towels and the same thing just keeps happening.

I find that that happens to our towels when I wipe my mouth after brushing my teeth. I'm assuming it's because I use a whitening toothpaste.

this is a total shot in the dark but orangey spots makes me think maybe rust? from the inside of your washer or dryer?

It seems kind of ridiculous to me that towels can't hold up to normal cleansing/grooming products. Isn't that kind of the point of towels? To wipe stuff like that off you?

Vally, I doubt it's rust--our washer and dryer are brand new.

For some reason, only blue sheets have this problem. In HS, any acne meds I used would discolor blue sheets, but any other color wasn't affected.

I'd bring them back in to return, rather than call. Face to face, I think you're more likely to get action (and if you don't, then you can call). It doesn't sound like you're doing anything more than sleeping on the sheets and that's unacceptable for that to happen that quickly. Bring them in to return them and make a fuss till they do it if they give you any problem. I'd also google the brand and look around a bit first to see if this is a common problem with them -- if it is, exchange them for something else; if not, just try a one-off exchange with the assumption that your particular set is bad.

I think blue dyes are pretty unstable, and it sounds (to me) like you have a set where they aren't properly fixed-- particularly since you said you aren't using anything that would discolor them.

I can imagine in my mind the kind of yellow spots you're talking about-- smaller, and more dramatic, than sweat stains (this happened to a pair of my roommate's pants in undergrad.

I don't know what I would do; I'm so shy and non-confrontational.

I think you can return them. Just ask. I know someone who returned luggage they used on their honeymoon cuz it was too large(resulting in overage fees for flights) and they got the smaller version.

This happened with my Pottery Barn beige towels. When I took them back, the very rude salesperson told me the "only way" this could have happened was if I'd put bleach in the washer. I told her I don't ever use bleach. She said it was all she could do to not laugh at me (she really said this!)

Later I found out that ProActiv was probably causing this. I bought all white towels and ended the problem.

At macy's you usually have 180 days (6 months) to return things if you aren't 100% satisfied (used or not). You really shouldn't have a problem. Do you have gift receipts? If not, then I'd start by calling the registry line and go from there.

This used to happen in my parents house when I used Proactiv and then it happened again when my sisters used it.

Now it happens at my house with brand new towels and sheets that aren't white because my FI uses it.

Having worked for Macy's, I can tell you this: Macy's will not accept any returns that are not in re-sellable condition. Macy's is not Nordstrom's, and they won't just take anything back. However, they might do an even exchange for you if you'd like another set of Hotel sheets.

FWIW, it's the Benzoyl Peroxide that's in Proactive that discolors things. Other acne products have BP in them too, so look out for that. Salycylic acid (the stuff used in most mild over-the-counter acne products) shouldn't pose any problems.
