[QUOTE]In Response to Re: Questions!!! : I don't understand what makes people want to mix some breeds, but there are some that I think are just adorable. FMIL has a cockapoo (or something like that), and that dog is cute even though she's a spoiled rotten biotch. Of course, I'm also slightly biased about designer dogs because my sister has a Morkie (half Maltese, half Yorkie) which works out perfectly with her pet allergies, and he's the sweetest, cutest thing on the planet. I want one soooooo bad, and I already told FI that we're getting one when we get married. Because everybody needs some puppy love, my fav pics of Max (sister's dog): He thinks the cat should play with him.

Exactly.. What is so wrong with a regular ole Golden Retriever, Cocker Spaniel or a Poodle that we should breed them together. For what? Allergies? I'm allergic to cats, but I've been around them my entire life so they don't bother me at all. The idea of people coming together and trying to pick the best characteristics of each breed to make like a super dog makes me queasy.. Because if we do it to dogs and cats, who's to say someone's not going to try it with kids and humans, and then here we go and it's a Hitler situation all over again... Okay.. Sorry I may have gotten a bit carried away with my conspiracy theory, but I support finding treatments for allergies rather than trying to "create" a hypoallergenic pet.

I love that Morkie! FI's Mom has a Maltese and it's so sweet and adorable.

I really like Cockapoos and Goldendoodles. I don't really care how someone gets their dogs, though I plan to adopt (yes, there are mixed-breeds that are at humane societies, too, though often they have more than 2 types. And yes, I do want a dog that is mostly poodle and/or maltese, simply because I have allergies, but I don't like poodle's personalities so I'd like it to be mixed with a friendlier breed). I don't like seeing puppy mill type situations where the animals are sick and not well cared for, but what matters most to me is the owners who have the dogs, not where the dogs come from. I see way too many people in Miami Beach who have dogs for fashion statements (my office is located in an upscale condo building in South Beach). It's sad to see them dragging them out to go to the bathroom in the morning and again after work, and that's all the fresh air or exercise or attention these dogs get all day! Judge me for wanting a "designer dog" but I'll take really good care of that dog when I have it. I think that's what is most important.

Oh, and Sami, people DO try to do it with people! That's why all those mothers want their children to marry Doctors and Lawyers, or you hear someone comment about how you hope the child won't get his father's nose, etc. I have "friends" down here who are very self-image focused and they date solely based on potential genetic material for their future off-spring.

Me and the boy.

My mom had an 18 y/o Himilayan cat that passed away about 3 weeks ago, and she doesn't know, but I'm going to get her a new one tonight! She and Charlie (the 18 y/o cat) were inseperable. He tolerated my dad and I, but he worshiped my mom. She originally said she wanted to wait, but I would hear her crying at night, or she would wake up in the middle of the night and call for him, and then cry because she'd remember that he was gone, so I took action! I found a 2 y/o doll face himilayan named Cinderella (Cindy for short) and talked to the owner and she didn't want to get rid of her, but she said it sounded like my Mom needs her (she really does) so since she has to get rid of her, she's glad it can be to us. My mom thinks we're just going out to dinner!! So excited.

Sami, that reminds me of Glee with the "Redheaded Supremisists". Hilarious!

FI and I may have to go for genetic testing and may consider genetic counseling if I'm a carrier for Fragile X Syndrome or if he's a carrier for this very rare disease that runs rather strong in his Mom's side of the family where children are born without fingers or toes. I know neither of those conditions are life threatening, but it would be worth it to me to avoid those challenges if reasonably possible. If it's too difficult or too expensive, we may opt to adopt instead. Again, possibly flameworthy, but that's what we've decided to do.

Mixing breeds can be INCREDIBLY dangerous for their health.
Don't get me wrong... I'm not a breed snob (well... I am a LITTLE... but not a LOT) I would be perfectly happy getting a sweet old mixed mut from the pound, but to pay a bunch of money for a "designer breed" is a horrible idea. Mixes happen and they deserve love health just like full breeds, but to specifically mix two? I don't get it. It ruins lineage. It causes extra health problems in that first breeding, and in tons of breedings after. I know that people that like this whole "designer" thing don't usually give a crap about breeding the animal, and probably don't think much into researching their animal/breed to consider the long-term health risks but... GAH... This upsets me greatly. -_-

We are an adopt only family with our pets. I like to think I have a designer dog she is a border lab. Really just a border collie/lab mix and she is a pound puppy. The other one is a full bread (pound puppy) gordon setter. His owner said he wouldn't hunt and was gun shy so he turned him in to the pound. Some people suck.

I thought there were already breeds that were hypoallergenic. I guess it depends on what your allergy is, but I always thought of it as some of those breeds (aka the dogs with hair and not fur) would be hypoallergenic anyway because they don't give off all the pet dander that a dog or cat that sheds a lot would.

Rud. The dog was probably "gun shy" because he didn't properly raise him around the nosie as a puppy. People are idiots. I want to volunteer at a shelter, but I think I would end up yelling at a LOT of people.. or just punching them. It would be bad.

Sami- reading that about your mom made me really emotional :( I know my Binx is only two, but I can't even think about the day he passes. I will be depressed for sure. He's my fur baby. He had a seizure while my FI was on a det a few months ago, and I was a MESS. FTL- I LOVE maine coons! The family I used to work for (and lived with for a while) has one, and he is SO cute. The best part, he is a mutant kitty! He has an extra toe on each paw. And their tails...awesome! His purr is really loud and his meow is a tiny little high pitched "mew."
image
• edited December 2011
hahahha I love it Binx. Yeah the extra toe is most common on males so my girl didn't have them, but man she had the personality of one. Best cat ever, and I am not much of a cat person. (don't get me wrong.. I love them. They are awesome. I am just more of a dog person since I grew up training and showing) Sometimes she would just sit there and look at you and open her mouth to make a growling sound... and then she would just... keep her mouth open, as if it were comfortable.. such a dork. :)

How did the seizure go? Was it really bad? Did you have to go to the vet? :( sadness.
• edited December 2011
FTL- yeah I hate some people when they just make excuses. Our gain though because he is the most cuddling little thing.

Since everyone is sharing here are our two. The Black and white one is the border collie/lab mix. She is too smart for her own good. The other one is the gordon setter. He is the sweetest dog I have ever met.

I do too. Yours looks pretty cuddly too! They are both really cuddly. We had to get a bigger bed because H and I were crammed onto 1/3 of the bed while they got the other part. HA!!! They are the best company. I always say dogs are better than most people. Laughing

Well I was in my bedroom when I heard a very loud thud. Looked around, found Binx in the tub, and realized he had fallen from the window above it. So I'm guessing seizure came first. He was just laying there, all stiff and drooling, his paws paddling like he was swimming. Finally that stopped, but he was non-responsive for another 15 minutes. I was terrified to move him since he had fallen, but he eventually got up on his own. Meanwhile, I completely panicked. I called 911 SOBBING "I'm sorry I know this is the wrong place to call but I don't know who else to call. Can you please just give me the number for an animal hospital." The fact that I called 911 for my cat is now kind of amusing! So, I managed to get Binx in his crate and drove him to the animal hospital at 10 at night. They examined him, and everything seemed fine. That night I confined him to my bedroom, and I set an alarm for every 90 minutes to wake up to check on him. I brought him to a vet a couple days later and spent $200 on tests, and they didn't find anything to cause the seizure. He hasn't had any more seizures since that I know of. Just remembering the event makes me emotional. He is seriously my fur-baby. FI calls me crazy cat lady, and I just say "yep!"

I had to post when FTL mentioned Maine Coons. A good friend has two Maine Coons (brothers)--one has very long hair and looks crazy and the other has smooth hair. Both are huge. We were all over there one night and I found out that FI thought they were called "Man Coons"--like they were called "Man" because they were so big or something! I guess he just thought they were super manly cats :)

What were you like in high school: Much like I am now- I didn't make friend easily, was more of a loner; I've always gotten along w people older than me, I was never into fads or cliques... A lot of people saw me as nerdy (I guess I am) or the teachers pet (this one wasn't true)
What are you like now: ME!! I like to have fun, and I like being busy most of the time with an occasional relax day. I can be super sarcastic but I think I can be tasteful about it. A lot of people don't know if I'm joking or being serious most of the time.. dry humor runs in my family.
Favorite holiday: Easter :)
Favorite quotation: "To get what you've never gotten, you have to do what you've never done".

Thanksgiving doesn't have music like Halloween and Christmas does.. And Thanksgiving is a reminder of how we eeffed over the Natives. Do you hate the NativeS??!!!

Hah kidding... I love Thanksgiving toooooo I'm just impatient... Growing up my mom always made me wait until AFTER Thanksgiving dinner and then I could dive into the Christmas stuff.. So when I started living on my own I was like FREEEDOOOOOMOMMM!!!!! And have been a cheater.. :P
But last year H didn't get home from deployment until like.. 3 weeks before Christmas and he didn't want to be overwhelmed with holiday stuff when he got some so I didn't get to decorate as much as usual. This year will be crazy. I am planning fo rmy house to look like a Martha Stewart magazine.
