Hawaii

So tell me I'm cheap...

I'm a full time student, part time worker, mommy of a four year old, have parents who can pay the whole thing but aren't (why oh why did I say "Oh, I'm an adult and we can pay for this ourselves) but when it's all said and done it's costing double what we wanted...

Small beach wedding. I'm splurging on everything except for my boquet. I just can't justify spending $200 for flowers I'm going to hold for 30 minutes. I'm already going to shop around Costco, etc. for leis, why not flowers for a boquet? I could see only having to spend $30 for a boquet. LOL. That seems so sad to me, $1500 dress, $7000 ring, and $30 boquet!

Call me cheap.

    You're cheap :)

Everyone has the one thing that they refuse to spend a lot on!!

Hm, prudent?  Yes.  Rational?  Also yes.  Cheap?  No.  Cheap would be asking your guests to buy their own drinks at your wedding.  FWIW, I would encourage you to also look at Whole Foods for flowers.  :)

Don't sweat it.  We all really do have our own things we don't care about.  We're not doing wedding favors.  Figured an OOT welcome back & a hosted whale watching cruise were enough.

I'm cheap all the way around. Aka, DIY. The only thing we are splurging on is the food after the ceremony. We all do what we have to do. I'm lucky enough to have a lot of great ppl in my life who have the skills to be able to do a lot of things for us that would normally cost us thousands of dollars. With out those ppl there is no way we'd be pulling off the wedding we want with the budget we have.

This. We didn't do favours either! OOT bags and party were more than enough!

I don't think you're cheap. You know what's important to you.

If you're still considering going the florist route, try asking them to show you the best that they can do for your budget.  The easiest ways to reduce the bouquet cost are going for a smaller diameter (ie. 6" or under), using local flowers (orchids!), and limiting the varieties of flowers.

There is no way I would pay $200 on flowers at all . . . . I had a hard time spending $65 on my sisters MOH bouqet! Until I joined this board I didnt even think of doing something myself or going to costco. All my flowers are already paid for most of them were included in my wedding package. But I would totally do a DIY bouqet you can go onto stsy.com and buy like faux hand tied bouqet holders too for like 20 bucks if you wanted. Either way any flowers are going to look great! :)

Ahhh, a boquet is $200!? oh man, I kow i'm cheap. I honestly don't want to spend more than $30 on mine, esp since it's gonna be dead within a few days. Did anyone try to bring theirs home and dry it? I don't imagine i'd want to even attempt to pack mine. I wish I was crafty and confident in making boquets.

I am totally with you on not spending a ridiculous amount of money for flowers that are going to die the next day or two anyways. Check out youtube for instruction videos on how to make your own bouquet, search for "how to make a bridal bouquet" or borrow a book from the library. It doesn't look all that hard. I actually tried to do my own centerpieces and ended up making something that would look like a decent bridal bouquet. For a beginner like me, I think it's easiest using roses all in one color, adding more variety of flowers and different colors made it harder to assemble.

genius-why didn't i think of that?! I'm definitely gonna youtube it, I think I want to go with all white orchids or all green ones with the fuschia in the middle.

You and I are in the same boat. I feel the exact same way, I am ordering all my flowers from Maui Floral and making my own bouquets. I am also ordering all the leis from her as well. She is super nice, and has good prices. My bouquet and my 2 bridesmaids bouquets should cost right around 80.00 ish.

My mom is making my bouquet.  Ordering the flowers for it and all the leis through Costco.

I've been battling with the florist about prices and I'm with everyone else....I cannot justify spending $200 on a bouquet. NO WAY! When I told the florist that my flower budget was $250 for ALL of my flowers, she basically told me to find someone else. hahaha! I may just end up going the Costco route myself. Can you really place an order directly through Costco?

My cousin had $25K in red roses at her wedding (it was spectacular), and I think they gave them out to senior homes, hospitals, etc. the next day.  Flowers are a pretty big expense that really will be gone the next day, but honestly - so are most things.  DJ is fun, but he's there for a few hours.  Hair/Makeup look good for a few hours, and then they start wilting as well.  Pictures and video are really the only things that stay on after the wedding - spend your money there and you won't be sorry!

I agree with the whole bouquet thing!  Does anyone know what types of flowers Costco-Honolulu sells?   I love peonies but they won't be in season so opting to due the real touch florals......  Does anyone know if Costco leis are cheaper than Chinatown?

If you decide to DIY your bouquet, I would suggest seeing if you have a family member or friend who can do it for you.  It's something that can't be done ahead of time, and you will be busy with so many things the days before the wedding.  I was thinking of DIYing my bouquet because I couldn't see spending so much money on one.  I even bought floral supplies and fake flowers so I could practice.  In the, end, I ended up just having a florist do it and paying the money.  I am glad I did...I would have been so stressed if I had to worry about that on top of everything else.

alohagurl13: The flowers at Costco will depend on the season.  They sell flowers in the store, but I think you can also pre-order wholesale flowers through them.  I have no experience with that, but I've heard good reviews from others who have.  I think that Chinatown is cheaper for leis (and you can bargain with them), and they'll have a bigger selection too.
