Florist Question

How did you pick a florist? I don't know a whole lot about flowers, but I'm going to have to start looking at florists soon and I'm not sure what to request besides some colors and flowers that aren't dead. I'm so laid back about it that I think I'm going to go into shock when I actually start getting quotes from places.

I guess while I'm here, any recs? I'm about to check out the vendor review site - it might be worth adding that we're going to need a huppah as well. And that the ceremony/reception will be in Neshanic Station. There are a few places that I and my family have ordered arrangements from that I'll be looking into, has anyone noticed any differences working with a florist for a wedding vs. everyday arrangements?

    I found an amazing deal by booking a florist in an area with a high elderly population. Her prices were super reasonable and she was thrilled to not work a funeral.

    In the Neshanic area you are going to have TONS of choices. You can look for a Teleflora florist since the prices tend to be stable.

    I did not pick flowers based on them being a certain kind but instead selected ones that fit the colors I wanted that were in season at the time of my wedding (which also keeps costs down.)

    Honestly, I went around to a few and just asked average price- it was all about price for me. But I wanted price and a good job done- I lucked out I paid under $800 for all of my flowers.

    Also a friend of my recommended the florist to me- she has no reviews online so I wouldn't have found her if it weren't for my friend.

    I took some reccomendations from this board and a few of my own that I found and met with them. Told them my budget--some were too high for me so that helped narrow it down. In the end, I went with a reccomendation from here. I had seen his work, the girls here raved about him so I figured it would be fine. I used Adam at AW Flowers in Kearny.

    I'm using Rose Petals and Lace and could not be happier! I found her through recommendations on here, and so far she has been the ONLY vendor that has not let me down in any sort of way! My mock up was exactly what I wanted, and I can't wait to see everything in 4 days. We are also having a chuppah - and I can't wait to see that too! We wanted a florist who specialized in weddings and events rather than just using your regular everyday florist - some of the florists didn't even understand what we were trying to describe. RP&L came in under our budget and they're giving us exactly what we are looking for!

    Start researching florists and see if you like their work.  Once you have a few people you know you like, meet with them and talk out what you want.  You'll be able to tell from the meetings who you want to work with.

    I personally didn't know much about flowers or know what I wanted for centerpieces.  I met with three florists.  One I could tell right away we didn't have the same taste levels.  When it came down to the last two, I went with who I felt more comfortable with.  We're using Flower Elegance in Fair Lawn.  While they were pricier than the other choice, Anna seemed to get exactly the feel we're going for and had great ideas for our centerpieces.

    Based on recommendations from this board my husband and I wound up going to Nathan at Avenue Flowers and we both loved his personality, his honesty, and his willingness to work within our price range, so we stayed with him and didn't meet with anyone else.

    I wasn't big into our floral arrangements either.  We wanted to keep the price reasonable and we just wanted arrangements that were bright and fresh and young looking.  I did some searching online for arrangements in our wedding colors, found a few I liked, brought them to Nathan, and he worked with us from there.

    It's really important to find a florist (or really, any vendor) who truly loves what they do and cares about their customers because then they'll be more willing to work with you to fit your budget and taste.
