Puerto Rico questions

Hi all--my honeymoon in Puerto Rico is coming up and I'm wondering about a few places we're thinking of visiting.  I'd love to hear your advice if you've been there!

1.  If you could only do a day trip to Vieques or Culebra, which would you choose, and why?

2.  I'm hearing that the bioluminscent bay at Fajardo isn't necessarily the coolest of the ones there, but is it still worth visiting if we can't travel as far as the other ones?

Thanks!

Re: Puerto Rico questions

  • I went to Puerto Rico and styed at the Hilton Caribe in San Juan.  The hotel is amazing.  Great service, lots of activities, swim up bar, plus resturants right in the hotel.  I'm not sure if they do all inclusive though, you may want to ask.

As far as activities... I did a kayaking adventure to the bioluminscent bay and had a great time.  The tour guide was super friendly and we had a lot of fun people on the trip.  The tour is at night so you can see the water light up once you kayak through the bay.  I have never kayaked before in my life so it was definitely an experience.  The way out was fun but on the way back the tide starts to come in so you are fighting against the current the whole way back.  Once we got out to the bioluminscent bay we were able to hop out of the kayak and swim around.  The water was like bath water it was so warm.  We didn't get to swim that long because they had another tour.  It was tough to get back into the kayak without flipping it over.  That was pretty frustrating.  I know they do boat tours out to the bay too.  That could be another option for you if you didn't want to kayak.

We also went to the Rain Forest which was pretty cool.  You can hike through the area and you can even get in some of the waterfalls and swim, but the water there is freezing.  It's an amazing site to see for sure, but definitely pack some good hiking shoes, we were up and down those mountains!

San Juan also has a casino and a bunch of night life.  It's definitely worth visiting.  A lot of good resturants.  We liked Parrot Bay (I think that was the name of it).  They have great drinks!  For some reason the food there tends to be expensive (I think because they fly their food in) but not to worry they do have local food... mainly plantains which I wasn't wild about.

I didn't ever visit Vieques or Culebra while I was there, I mainly stayed in San Juan, Ariecibo & Cabo Rojo.

Once you get there you can always ask the hotel what type of events your husband can do.  That's how we booked everything was through them (well minus the rain forest, we drove out there ourselves).  I know they also have the Bacardi Factory there that you can tour and they also have another booze cruise which I heard was super fun but didn't have the time to check it out.

If you are renting a car - be careful, the drivers there are insane!  We were on one of their highways and a motocycle will drive up b/t you and another car in the next lane.  We also saw a lot of the locals drinking while they were driving... no joke they cut us off and then just held up their beer can!  Regardless, it's a very fun place to visit with lots to do!

    Best of luck!
  • I'm a little late to this but I went to Vieques in 2008 and LOVED it!  I did the bio bay in Vieques which is supposed to be a lot better than the one in Fajardo.  Definitely do the kayak over the boat tour, it's a much better experience.  I'm sure you have already or will find this in  your research, but you definitely need to rent a jeep when you are there.  The beaches are absolutely amazing but most of them involve driving 10-20 mins on a dirt road to get to - once you are there it's totally worth it.  Blue Beach and Navio were our favorites.  Also research hotels carefully - the W wasn't open yet when we went and we found many of the accomodations were pretty run down (we stayed at Evermere - which was good, although I think my fi would have preferred the W).  If you aren't at the W, I would recommend staying near Esparanza rather than Isabell II - we found it to be the nicer of the two towns and it's much closer to most of the great beaches.

I've never been to Culebra but heard it's beautiful but not much to do there (that's why I chose Vieques).

    Good luck!
