Mel I definitely understand what you mean, and Hinduism, being the oldest living religion, would be the one to discuss here anyway, not Christianity.
While we can't go back that far in time to know how law came around, I do believe that they were there before Hinduism was.
Honestly, I feel that laws were just STRENGTHENED by the addition of religion, and not the other way around.
You think we, at our most primitive state, knew not to murder and steal? If they didn't, we wouldn't be here today, because they would have completely killed off each other. Instead those uneducated, nonreligious primitive humans 3000+ years BC ago figured out that it's better to work together, share, and NOT kill each other. Thus, laws were created, whether written or just mutually understood.
Then came religion.
But as the world evolved, so did religion, and so did laws.

Amanda- I don't know if you're still around but if you are, what are your thoughts on the death penalty?

Also, just to put it out there, I know you and I disagree about these topics and I hope you do not think I'm jumping at you. I just like to talk about it and I don't want you to think I'm being an asshat or anything.

I think some of us did, but I also believe that assault, murder, and theft was probably much more common back then because those primitive humans didn't have as many consequences for their actions. Survival of the fittest. I would imagine that laws and religion came into the world the same time, the same way. Everyone was looking for a way to make sense of the world around them.

I like political debates. I took AP government in high school and loved it. My teacher was amazing. On a random sidenote I'm giving a persuasive speech November 11 for my speech class on why gay marriage should be legal. Should be interesting since I don't know my classmates' views on the subject

I wish I was more versed in politics. I feel like I know enough about who I like politically but not enough about the other side.
Oh my lovely hippy hikey friend :) I appreciate your logic as math major. Statement: "I believe in the bible, therefore I believe that murder is bad." A correct statement to coincide with that would be "I don't believe murder is bad, ergo I don't believe in the bible" That would be correct and is called the contrapositive. However, the inverse "I do not believe in the bible, ergo I do not believe murder is bad." and the converse "I believe murder is bad, ergo I believe in the bible." Are both only conditionally correct. Your statement does not hold true in this condition, Amanda, as several of us think murder is bad and do not believe in the bible. Aaaand that's FTL's Math lesson of the day: Discrete Mathematics. :] bahaha ETA: I realize this has no political standing and is irrelevant to the conversation at hand, I just like any excuse to fit in a Math lesson that is somewhat relateable. I feel everyone should know discrete Mathematics for ease of debate.. so there you go. :P

I totally didn't think Math Major when I read this. I thought of my Freshman Philosophy class. (Which I aced BTW lol) I miss creating arguments and talking about random stuff like..... how would you describe color to a blind person.. or where is the soul? (Is it in the center of your body? or within all your limbs? If it's in all your limbs-- do you loose part of your soul if you loose a limb?)

ya know the stuff that makes your head spin.

I used to be so into politics, and then I got burnt out bad. Mel, you've got a major point - that's an interesting way to view the flip side of my rather emotionally-based contradictory view. It's a complicated issue, and not one easily legislated. I think it's best in those circumstances to always err on the side of less legislation than too much.
In Response to Re: I know we try not to get political here... : Sorry, but those laws drive me crazy. How can you (general you, not you specifically) say that because someone wants a baby, it's homicide to kill said baby... but if the mom doesn't want it and gets an abortion (i.e. killing the baby), it's not murder? That just seems hypocritical to me, it's such a double standard. And to your point that if you and your unborn child were killed, your FI would mourn you both - what if the child's father wants it but the mother doesn't and chooses to get an abortion? Do you think he wouldn't mourn the loss of a child he never got to have?
Posted by melbelle24
Yes. I know someone who had this happen. They morn the fact that there is no child there. He thinks about what his life would be if there was. It makes going to see friend's newborn babies tough.
Military Brides December 2011 Siggy. Holiday picture with your SO. We suck and don't have one :/ Those who matter don't mind and those who mind don't matter.
