Flattering style for plus size bridesmaids?

I'm looking for bridesmaids dresses that will be flattering on my plus size bridesmaids. I have bridesmaids ranging from size 16-24. Can anyone please suggest what style dresses look best on plus size bridesmaids. Long, short, straps, no straps, etc, etc.

Re: Flattering style for plus size bridesmaids?

  • I forgot.....types of fabric would also help
  • I'm plus sized and the best BM dress experiences I've had began with all the bridesmaids going with the bride to a shop to try on what they like (and will probably know what looks good on them). Then the bride can make the final decisions about style and color.
  • I agree -- if you don't have your heart set on a specific dress for your girls, take them all shopping and let them help you decide! They will love you for it!! I have a variety of sizes in my bridesmaids -- ranging from a 4 to a 24 -- and I got all the girls together on a weekend to go dress shopping. I told them all I was very open to each girl wearing a different dress, as long as it was in the same color (the color I knew, but the style I wasn't sold on yet). At the end of the day - all four decided they liked the same one!!

  • Plus-sized or not, it all depends on the details of their figure. Where are their trouble-spots? I, for instance, am borderline plus-sized and gain most of my weight in my arms and tummy. One of my close friends, however, is several sizes larger than me, but actually has a slimmer waist and arms, instead gaining everything in the lower half of her body. Clearly, we'd look good in entirely different styles.

Fuller skirts are great for evening-out top heavy girls. Straighter, simpler A-Lines are better for the more pear-shaped girls. Also, if a girl is really self-conscious about her arms, avoid strapless. You don't have to go long-sleeved or anything, but even a halter can draw attention away from the arms and focus it on the neck and chest instead. Also, with halters, you don't run the same risk of armpit-pudge that you do with strapless.

I'm planning on picking a color and fabric and letting my BMs pick their own styles... since they range in size from 0 to about 20 or 22. That might help you... or like someone else said, take all of them shopping and make a democratic decision. If you're dead set on picking one style and can't take them all shopping, though... halters with a full-ish a-line skirt would be a good middleground.

In terms of fabric, I'd suggest charmeuse or silk. Nothing too light, nothing too heavy.
  • nooooo satin!
  • Thank you all!!!
  • I would suggest choosing a color and fabric and letting your bridesmaids pick their own style. Just because they are plus sized doesn't mean they all have the same shape.
