I have one of those fancy wine openers where you can open the bottle with one swift hand motion, but I always found it a PITA to pull out as well. By the time I pulled it out from whereever we were storing it, adjusted the handle to the height of the bottle, and then opened it, I could have opened the bottle with my cheapo opener. I always end up using the standard bottle opener that you can guy from the grocery store for $2 because it's faster. Also, many bottles were too tall for the fancy opener anyways. <strong>I do love the screw tops though. They're no longer on the "cheap" wines either.

I typically lurk so, not to come out of nowhere with this, but a lot of mid to high end wines are using screw caps now because it is better for the wine.  Real corks and even synthetic let too much oxygen into the bottle and spoils nearly 1 in 8 bottles.  Too many bottles out there that will never be consumed because of corks.   Sad fact but true.
• BSC is Batshit Crazy

Don't know what FLDS but it's something about Latter Day Saints, I think.

• I think its fundamentalists latter day saints.

I don't think I can do it - but I know I'll want to see how awful it is.

Yep I'm currently enjoying a few chunks of synthetic cork with my wine right now. :)
• I found this (clicky).  Lots of stuff saying they aren't FLDS, but it says they're something called AUB.  Don't know how accurate it is.

• Yeah FLDS is the fundamentalist version of Mormonism. It's what the group in Arizona/Utah and that ranch in Texas call themselves. All FLDS practice polygamy, but I wasn't sure if all polygamists were FLDS. It makes me curious because they live in suburban SLC I think, but the FLDS have increasingly been pressuring their members to move to the ranches and FLDS communities.

I have a weird fascination with the FLDS so I've read some books. :)

It only adds to the experience, right? Nothing like a chewy wine.

If you can talk wine, then you need to come out of lurking more often.

Thanks for the link! That would explain why they're more "normal" than most polygamists I've read about so far.
• I agree, Birdie, there is something fascinating with FLDS, the whole polygamy thing seems to go against the basic human tendancy to be jealous over your partner cheating on you....

• Oh okay, glad to know about the abbreviations.  I google most but BSC wasn't coming up with anything that would match up with TK.  And as for the Sister Wives, they have said that they are a different sect or type or whatever they call it.

• I find it interesting that he just alluded to the fact that his company covers all of his kids on insurance. They didn't specifically mention the wives though...
• I suppose it's only the wife they are legally married to that gets to partake in the health insurance benefits...

• So which wife is he legally married to?

• Mery because she was the first one.  At the end she says that she got fired from her job because of the show.

• They are all legally his kids, so ya know...they should insure them.

• I am going to need to check this thing out.  I just really don't get polygamy.  It seems like some system that would be really awesome if there were not a lot of men to go around for lots of women - maybe after a war or something?
but otherwise - wtf?  basically it means that there are a lot of men left out in the cold.

I do see something kind of nice in the relationships between the wives.  I would love to be in a lesbian friend-type relationship and still get a man every 4th night.

There is a whole group called "The Lost Boys" who are young boys usually 12-18 who have been kicked out of their community for various reasons. I think usually it's so the older men can marry the girls that the younger guys would normally marry. It's really sad because they've been completely sheltered their entire lives and then are kicked out into this world that they've been taught is evil and are completely cut off from their family.
• Clearly I didn't pay enough attention to the episode because of TK.  I'll watch it on demand again.  I know he had said in an episode before though that his work didn't know about his lifestyle.  So I have no idea what they knew about kids though.  Maybe they thought he had 12 kids from 1 wife?

• HTF were they able to fire her...I mean wouldn't that go against FOR?

• I've read a few books written by former FLDS women if anyone is interested. I think I  find it fascinating because there's this entire culture that seems so foreign to what we know in mainstream America and they live here as well and seem to function relatively autonomously.
• Birdie - do they talk about why they left the FLDS?

• After reading the books that I have, I understand sort of why they have the laws that they do (even if they rarely try to prosecute the people that need to be prosecuted). There is serious abuse in a lot of the FLDS families in those private communities. However, I think it's a real waste of taxpayers money for them to try to purse anything legal with the Brown family.
In Response to Re: Roll call : I honestly would rather people go to jail for cheating on their spouses than for smoking pot.  Can we rearrange the police/jail budget for that?
Posted by andy71781
Agreed.  There should definitely be some punishments for that.  H and I were talking about people who cheat on their spouses while on the ship.  He said that some Captains will make you call home in front of them to tell your spouse they were cheating.  I said if I ever get that call you will come home to an empty house and empty bank account.

• I definitely think cheating should be a jailable (real word? I dunno) offense...in the military it is an ucmj (military court) offense, why not in the real world??
