GAMES!

It finally dawned on BF that I don't think sitting in front of the TV counts as quality time so he suggested a game night once a week.

We were pretty pumped about the idea until it dawned on us that the only games were have in the house are monopoly and a deck of cards.

So I'm looking for suggestions.

I was going to suggest Apples to Apples, but it's not fun with only 2 people. Scrabble?

Sorry I'm not much of a help, I don't play many games.

Scattergories is pretty fun , scrabble is always a great staple to have as well as people said above , Apples to Apples is one of my favorites but not really ideal for 2 people sadly. i used to live and breathe board games but i just woke up so i'll try to add more soon ><

    Twister!!

Seriously though, There are so many card games you could play like Rummy. I'm not very useful in the board game department considering the few I play include Mall Madness and Pretty Pretty Princess (BF's little sis, lol) This is a bit expensive compared to a board game but do you guys have a Wii? That is so much fun and you get a work out from it. BF's parents have one and we all sit on the couch together playing/making fun of each other.

Me and the BF love playing Wii. But if you're looking game-games...You're going to think I'm a dweeb, but I have also posted recently that I support minivans.

So....CRIBBAGE! I love cribbage, unabashedly. It's fun and addictive.

    these suggestions rock!
It's been a tough day at work so my brain is absolute mush.
We do have a wii which we love to use but I did want to switch it up a bit.

Meganface you are my new hero! Cribbage is one of my absolute favorite games! Though FI sometimes has a hard time of it because he can't add as quickly as me (also I've been playing since I was 7)

I would also suggest any version of trivial pursuit, Boggle, and another altime favorite - the original game of Life!

We play canasta, which is almost as bad as cribbage. I love cranium and he loves bananagrams (I hate it, I keep trying to spell velociraptor).

OMG, Button, FI and I had the same conversation! TV is not interaction!

So, he bought RuneBound (I think), we have yet to play it. But he won't listen to me when I say I want SCRABBLE.

It's like, he likes the idea of playing games together in theory, but only wants to play HIS kind of game, not something we can both enjoy.

Of course I spoiled him with all my Lineage2/Guild Wars/ World of Warcraft playing back in the day, now he can't comprehend me doing anything else. I AM A VERSATILE PERSON OK!

Since BF and I have a weekly card game at the house when ever I ask if he wants to play a game his response is "hold 'em or stud?"

Have you ever played Phase 10? It's a pretty fun card game! Or, you can use a regular deck of cards to play Speed. Actually, I just learned how to play Nerts (it's kind of like a solitaire-type race with teams).

Also... have you ever played Cornhole? It's kind of like horseshoes, except you use bean bags & wooden platforms.

We used to play phase 10 all the time at our old place, we've been meaning to buy a deck for ourselves, it gets really competitive I love it!

BF and I do this too! I'm glad other people do, we thought we were odd... All the games we play have been mentioned, but we have fun with poker, too. It's fun to try to fib about the hand you're holding and see if you can pull it off!

Now we just need to find some more couples to play with so we can play apples to apples! Definitely not fun with 2 people...

    Cribbage rocks!

Or have a few adult beverages and play Jenga. Love that game. Somehow I like it more after a few drinks, but it's fun sober too. Maybe. Not sure I've ever played it that way. But I guess it could be.

BF and I just had this same discussion last week. Only problem now is that his schedule changed so we're pretty much only going to see eachother on the weekends now.

Oh and PS Noelle, I LOVE bananagrams!

paintgirl, you're so right about Jenga. Has anyone ever played Truth or Dare Jenga? Back in college, one of my sorority sisters wrote Truths & Dares on her Jenga pieces with a marker. I forget where she got the idea but it was really fun!
  • edited December 2011
Haha, truth or dare jenga actually used to be sold in stores, but we made our own rather than buy a new set when we were in college as well.

Other than the ones already mentioned (and there are some AWESOME ones mentioned), I would say:
Nightmare - my most favorite board game EVER.  It's a video boardgame from the 80s, but you can still find in on Ebay, and it's incredible.  They have a DVD version called Atmosfear that I really want to get now that our VHS player has died.

Arkham Horror - a tabletop RPG with a board and cards.  Our games usually last anywhere from 3-8 hours, depending on how good our rolls are.  I've never played with just two people though, so I'm not sure how well it'll work.

I'm pretty sure we're getting Arkham Horror and/or Settlers of Catan as wedding gifts from one of our gaming friends because every time he visits I bug him to bring them, and I couldn't be more excited about it.  :-)

I'm on board the Scrabble wagon. I also just bought something called Carcasonne to give to FI for Valentine's Day. It's supposed to be kind of similar to Settlers of Catan, but better for 2 people. Cribbage is next on my list, but I'm also thinking a Wii would be a good wedding/engagement gift for FI.

May I recommend Scattegories? We like to play that one on holidays and such with our crew. You can play it straight (always fun), or you can be bad influences like ourselves and turn it into a drinking game.

How to Play Scattegories, the Drinking Game for Bad Influences and Dirty Minds:

Standard Rules - one point for one word, 2s and 3s for doubles or triples (River Road, very vigorous violinists, etc.), no points for duplicates

    New Rules

    - If you can turn your answer into a reference to alcohol or sex, you get double points.
    - If you have a duplicate, all those that answered the same do a shot/take a drink.
    - If you answer and someone calls bullshite, the group takes a vote on your answer (same as original game). If your answer gets voted down, you do a shot/take a drink. If your answer gets voted in, whoever called bullshite does a shot/takes a drink.
    - Whomever has the lowest score at the end of each card/round does a shot/drink (optional rule...depends on how messed up you really want to get).

We played this way at a friend's beach house a few months ago. rickylee was schnaukered on Jello shots by the 8th list. ;)
