So I think my DJ might be dying.

Or is very sick....We met our DJ for our final meeting last month, and he looked as though he lost 40 lbs. He also had 3 large scars on his head, which looked pretty recent. I am making the assumption he had brain surgery. I of course didn't say anything.

He is usually very prompt with email (same day reply), but I sent him 2 emails last week, and there was no repsonse. I sent him one Monday asking if he got those emails. He said he did but he had a "family matter" last week, and he would respond to my emails later that night. He didn't

I feel very bad for him, and I truly hope he is okay and gets well, but should I have a back up a plan? Should I bring up my concern that he might forget/be to sick to be our dj? Fire and start over? I would feel very very very bad about that.

I have a student coming in 10 minutes (if they aren't absent) so I might be out for a bit.

  • Is there anything in the contract about a back-up plan in case of emergency?  I think a lot of photographers have an assistant or someone who would fill in if there was an emergency and the photographer couldn't be there.  I would check that first.  If there's nothing, I might contact him and just act like you're getting your ducks in a row, checking with ALL of your vendors, to find out about emergency back-up plans, solidify times, etc.  That way it doesn't seem like you're singling him out but maybe you can get your concern addressed.

  • Good Idea. I will check. I am thinking no because its a one man show, but hopefully! Also good way to address it.

  • He may well be recovering, not dying.  I'd give him a week or so to recover a bit and then contact him again.  What does your contract say about him not being able to make it?  Most professional djs have a back-up person they rely on in those situations.
  • Duh, sorry I kept saying photographer but it's your DJ.  Same advice applies though.  :)

  • There's a dj "network" here that most dj's in the area are a part of so even though my dj owns his own business if something was to go wrong one of the "network" djs would fill his space.  You might check to see if he has anything like that?  I don't know how common it is?

  • I would think he'd let you know if he didn't think he was going to be able to do it.  He may just be going through something- recovering, as OWN said.  But yeah, it wouldn't hurt to check if he has a backup plan.

  • I wouldn't fire him, but like the other ladies said, find out what the backup plan is.  That's good to have even if your vendors are healthy, because random stuff can happen.

  • Our contract actually says that if for some reason he is unable to make it he will hire someone else reputable for the gig and pay the difference out of his own pocket that no matter what we will have a great DJ.
  • The harpist we used (everyone else was part of a company) had it in the contract that if she was unable to play she would find a suitable replacement, so I would think he would have a backup plan.

It could be something not as dire as well. Maybe he had a car accident or stomach flu, or as OWN said, perhaps recovering. When my aunt went through chemo a few years back she looked really bad, but is now strong and healthy again.
  • I would definitely check what the emergency back-up plan is just in case something happens.  Personally, I would do that will all your vendors.
