Thinning Hair

Hey ladies- I use to have full thick hair, but slowly it is thinning out.  I am 26 and have had my thyroid checked.  Any suggestions on products or anything to help???!??!?!  THANKS

Re: Thinning Hair

  • I've been having the same issue and have found a few things that have helped. I've found that using a good fortifying conditioner has helped. I also make sure to use heat protectant on my hair before straightening or styling. You might want to look into taking a multivitamin as well; sometimes hair thinning is out is due to vitamin deficiency.

  • Switch shampoo-Your shampoo could be causing the problem

Do you use a lot of product and do you do much heat styling?  Those could be culprits too.

    Do you color your hair?

  • I had the exact same thing happen to me a few years ago, and once I started taking better care of my hair it started thickening back up!

Try not to use super hot water when you wash your hair - that can be damaging. Definitely use a good conditioner - I used the same shampoo as always but "upgraded" to a better conditioner that my stylist recommended. I also started putting this hair oil on from like my ears down to the ends of my hair right after I got out of the shower...it's called "Surface Baba Oil", but there are probably a bunch of oils and serums you could get!

Try to avoid heat styling if possible, and don't brush your hair too often, but don't let it get too tangled either (there's a balance in there somewhere, haha).

also, most of the products that are labeled "thickening" don't actually do anything to make your actual hair thicker, they're just for styling purposes so don't waste your money on those! If you need to get products, buy products that are for damaged hair or hair that's prone to breakage.

My friend swears by prenatal vitamins to thicken her hair, but I've never tried them...who knows!

  • Biotin, milk,  and upping your protein will help.  So will porbiotics in food or tablet form (activia Yougurt is a good habit)

Your thinning might be due to a nutrient drop or deficiency or a metabolic issue... get to the bottom of that first.  Situations like Bariatric surgery, heavy dieting, enzyme imbalance and severe stress often lead to hair loss... Coming up with the initial why of the occurance will help a lot.

Also going Sulfate free with the shampoo and hair products might be gentler on the scalp.  Full body conditioners will be good too..If possible try to shampoo a little less and condition more.

I now condition my hair daily but only shampoo every 3rd day... My hair is loving that.  ( But it has never been on the oliy side so might not be for everybody)

Most non Genetic hair loss will be recovered within the next year or so If you get to the initial cause... Work the nutrition and health angle and see what looks to be the culprit.

  • I have the same issue.  I'm 25 and my hair thinned out at my temples and I just have short thin hair that looks horrible when I put my hair back and don't use a ton of hair spray.  I started taking prenatals and it really hasn't done anything except make the rest of my hair grow a little faster, but nothing for the thinness.  I thought it could be from my BC, but I have been on the pill for about 10 years now.  Not sure what else to do.
  • Thanks for all the tips! I will be trying some stuff.  To answer some of the other questions.  I have brown curly hair, I do not use any heat - I do not blow dry, curl or straighten.  I very rarely brush my hair, I usually just run my fingers through it when it is wet.  I switch shampoos often, but I am pretty stuck on my favorite gel - nothing else works as good.  Thanks for all the advise! :)
  • Hey Cebrady89 has some good tips but I've had a different experience. I was getting my hair colored at supercuts in 2005 (bc I was a cheap college student who didn't think straight obvi lol) and my hair was starting to fall out pretty regularly. I had thin hair from then on out...I started going to a lady who cut my hair properly, managed it well, colored it with non harsh chemicals (well as non harsh as it can be...just highlights) and I got regular cuts. Thickening conditioners always helped me, in all actuality. She mentioned this was for styling but volume shampoos and conditioners did help. You also have to make sure you're eating a balanced diet and taking vitamins for sure.... I never had issues with heat styling or using hot water. It was just stress that really put me out when I was younger... and I didn't have a problem with my thyroid either. I will say this... I was diagnosed with endometriosis later in the year and once I started being treated for it, I never had issues with my hair falling out. Not saying you have this, but if you have hormonal imbalances, this could be causing your hair to fall out too... (PS. fast forward 6 years later and I have my gorgeous wavy thick locks back ...and my hormones are in check!)
