Work stress

I was talking to my husband about being stressed about work, and he commented "its not work if youre not stressed".

What do you think? How much (% wise) would you say you are stressed at work? What stresses you out at work?

Re: Work stress

  • Uh, I'm very rarely stressed.  I very much disagree with your husband, in a way.  I enjoy my job enough that it's not "work" as in that dreaded "ugh I do NOT want to be here today" feeling.

I also think you can work hard without being stressed.  That probably makes no sense.  I tried.  Give me a cookie.

  • Oooh. Good question. I would say that I am stressed about 80% of the time at work. Unrealistic deadlines stress me out. Complex employee issues stress me out. Firing or laying people off stresses me out beyond belief. When things were at their worst last year, I considered changing professions because I felt like an executioner. Things are better now.

Im not at all saying that I dread work, or dislike work or anything... I love my job and my days are OK, just a lot of random spontaneous problems to fix and a whole whack of new responsibilities im not used to yet.
  • Does school stress count? Last semester I had a ton of stress. I do think anything where you have
    Fixed deadlines
Have to work around other people/asshats
    Have other life obligations

will cause at least some type of job stress.

  • Well when I started out I was stressed quite a bit but it's dwindled over time.

Right now I'd say I'm stressed 10% of the time.  When I worked in fundraising I was stressed probably 40% of the time.  I think part of the decrease is I am better suited to my current position than the old one at our organization.

I am stressed maybe 5% of the time.  I still get a paycheck every other week, and have for 3.5 years now :)  Too much stress isn't good for you.

ETA: Things that stress me out are difficult customers and difficult accounts.  Not too many of either of these, though.

  • Having too much downtime can stress me out - I tend to tune out to small things. I can be a perfectionist when I AM working on something, and it is hard for me to accept that people make mistakes all of the time.
I have a supervisor and a department head, and it's hard to reconcile which is the "boss" sometimes. The department head once told me to "allow" myself 5 mistakes a day.

But, when there's a shitton going on, and everyone needs something yesterday (and I might have procrastinated something), then I get pretty anxious.  But, I think I'm good at what I do, and my department likes me.

The CN version: Yeah, I've got stress sometimes at work, sometimes self-induced, sometimes not.

J has a lot of deadlines - different kinds of them, and ALWAYS has trucks broken down, so he's never not busy. They aren't even allowed to take time off between the Monday after Thanksgiving and Christmas Eve.

I love you Missy. Even though you are not smart enough to take online quizzes to find out really important information. ~cew
  • I'm stressed maybe 75% of the time. It's difficult working in social services since you can't really help everyone. I get stressed when I try to help someone find a job and it's taking a long time. I also get stressed at all of the paperwork. No matter how late I stay, I can't get rid of the paperwork. Ok maybe i'm stressed 99% of the time since even this post is stressing me out about work.

Eh, my stress level is pretty low at work.  I've been slacking majorly lately.  I'd say 5%.

  • Can work stress age a person??

  • I am stressed at work because I am constantly being challenged to do things that I have no confidence that I can do, and no interest in getting into, even though I rationally know that it is the next step in my career.

However, I have had jobs that I was not stressed about the work at all.
I think I can be adequately challenged (positive) without being totally stressed (negative).

For me, its the interpersonal stuff that is stressful for at work. My coworker and boss have similar personailites and have worked together forever, and I am very different. They say that's why they hired me, but it makes my position in most conversations very awkward, because I am always the odd woman out.

So I don't agree with your husband.

  • I really like my job and enjoy working.  I know I am weird.  Still stress does get to me about 30% of the time.

Ive been at my job for about 2 months now. Im the office administrator at a small corporate branding type of company. I run the office as well as all order processing, invoicing/some accounting stuff, production scheduling and overall conflict resolution for a huge myriad of aspects of the business.

Yes. I found my first grey hair last week at work. I went into the supply room, found a brown sharpie, and fixed it right up.

Im 26 and ive been getting gray hairs for a few years now (and most of those years were moderately stress free). Ive just given up and im going with them. I call them "natural highlights".

One of the benefits of being blonde.  It's harder to see greys!

I think I'm gonna keep up the sharpie routine until after the wedding. However, its busy season right now, so I might run out of sharpies before November, I'm 31, so I guess its my turn.

ETA: Raynes, my mom calls that "ash blonde", I guess because it looks like someone poured ashes on her head?

I think I'd rather be ash blonde than dirty blonde.  Maybe a dirty ash blonde.... Hmmmmm...

I would love to have a full head of salt & pepper hair, not just patchy white and dark brown hair.

I do like the salt and pepper look, especially with curly hair.  You'll age gracefully Nebbster.

  • I don't think I can give advice, I just had a mini breakdown on E about work/school.

    I win at failing!

I would say I am stressed out about work 20% of the time. Nothing signficant.

I get stressed out when my boss gives me something to do, and then another thing before I can finish the first thing, and then 8594853 more things come up that need my attention too. I have stayed about 30-45 minutes late every day this week to return phone calls, take deposits, meet with students and their families who come after hours etc.

    You didn't fail!

    P.S. I love your dress
  • I haven't worked a super steady job in a long while, but as a substitute, I rarely felt stressed.

I usually choose jobs that I enjoy overall, and I have always felt stressed from time to time, but it's usually like, 40% of the time. Not even half.

But I do my best not to let little things get to me.
  • Sorry for all the work stress. I'm going to have to at least partially disagree with your husband, Nebb. I think some level of stress is natural or expected with any job. But it's definitely not required and it can be quite minimal.

Shelly, you did not fail. I'm sorry you're going through a rut. But you did not/are not failing.
