Because it's ZOMG their day!
• I got most of the nicer small stuff for my shower. All the baking stuff, etc. J's favorite wedding gift was the gas can, hahah. Which was more of a gag gift from a friend, though J actually DID put it on the registry.
potluck receptions. I just... I can't.
Posted by musicalsunlight
Yeah, I found that out from a mutual friend.  I didn't want to bring it up to her because I'm sure she didn't think or know that it's against etiquette.  But I did say to our mutual friend that having a potluck reception (especially in the summer in your backyard, with little to no refrigeration available) is just asking for food poisoning.  So I'm hoping that she changes her mind, or switches to just cake and punch or something.  I've heard a couple of stories (haven't we all?) about potlucks where food was improperly refrigerated or stored and everyone got sick.

• I don't get how people WOULDN'T understand why a potluck reception is against etiquette. Who the hell wants to make something for a wedding they go to?

• My shower at work was a potluck because my boss is cheap.  I had nothing to do with organizing it, though.  I didn't even know about it until the day of.

• Potluck reception... wow.

Holly, my FMIL is so forgetful she forgot FI & I had set a wedding date & that we had already had a deposit on our venue. So I don't have to worry about her fussing over the wedding, I just need to worry she remembers to show up =/

• I weirdly miss planning a wedding. But mainly I just wanna do the wedding part over again. That ish was fun.

• Hah, Holly, that sounds like J's grandpa's wife. Not his grandma (thank goodness), but she is his third wife. She was apparently pissed that HER children and their families weren't invited.

• Holly, wow. I'm so sorry your FMIL is being a zilla. Is the wedding making her this crazy or is she normally like that?

On a different topic, the cupcake store FI & I are planning on getting our wedding cupcakes from has hurricane (like the drink), key lime, raspberry swirl, turtle, bananas foster & cinnamon bun cupcakes today. Please talk me out of going there and blowing my money on cupcakes...

She sounds wonderful, Holly.

• Well, hopefully once you & FI are married she'll turn the crazy down a notch Holly.

I just noticed you have 2 months to go! That's exciting =]

• Morning! It stopped raining just after I got in my classroom. Fabulous.
• Geez. It would be really hard for me to keep my mouth shut around her, Holly. I know a lot of J's relatives aren't comfortable around gay people but at least they kept their opinions to themselves and were perfectly polite about it when we were discussing the wedding, and also at the wedding.

I do admit that it was rather amusing seeing one of my very flamboyant friends do a kind of ANTM strut during dancing right past all of J's relatives.

Yeah, it didn't stay long here. The clouds are moving SUPER fast. When it was raining, it looked like a dust storm outside my office window.
• Wow Holly. Your FMIL sounds like a peach. Tattoos & a gay friend? You clearly must travel to another planet to know someone "like that".

I'm wondering what my FMIL will say when she sees my butterfly tattoo, which I'm debating of having it added on to soon. She'll either totally overlook it or flip her lid.

• A third of my WP was gay. If anyone had a problem with it, they kept it to themselves. Then again, I don't think it really came up in conversation. None of them wanted to bring a guest or their SO.
• Yeah, politeness is always the minimum, I would think. I actually was really touched when J's dad (known to be rather homophobic) went up and thanked my MOH for his great speech.

• OMG Holly where did your FMIL learn her manners? The Tactless School of Insults and Digs?

• My MIL told my H and his brothers that none of them better get tats, because she "didn't give birth to a tattoo."  H is so far the only one who has tattoos, and he has two of them.  My MIL said that she never wanted to see them, so H doesn't go shirtless at her house ever (he has one on his shoulder blade and one on his chest).

I think she was pretty disgusted that I have a tattoo, but you should have seen her face when she found out my SIL had one.  SIL has been in the family for like...six years longer than I have, MIL was absolutely SHOCKED that she had one!  It was pretty funny.

• Heh, H's grandma thanked him for not getting any tattoos after she saw me in a bathing suit the first time.  Then he got a tattoo.  Sorry grandma!  My dad just shakes his head every time I get a new one.

• My dad is very conservative, but he still thinks people should be treated wtih resepct. I know he thinks homosexuality is a sin, but he's in the "love the sinner, hate the sin" camp. He would never EVER say anything to hurt someone's feelings, and if he heard someone say anything, he'd rip that person a new one.
• That is how J's parents are, Special. What is funny is that my best friend and my MOH was the one who introduced me and J.

I'm in the same boat as Special's dad. But, I would NEVER be disrespectful, degrade, or belittle anyone because of their sexuality. You treat people the way you want to be treated, period. And I've actually torn people new ones for making homophobic comments. My high school BFF just married her wife a few months ago, she's never seemed more fulfilled & happy with her life.

I fail to understand how people can only look at one aspect of a person's life & immediately think they "know" them.
