They can't make my dress short enough for me!

I just got a phone call from the salon I purchased my dress at telling me that my hollow to hem (54") is too short, and the designer won't make it less than 58".  She says it can be altered with hemming, but I'm terrified the dress will look different/awful....it's not just a straight trim off 4"!

Has anyone else had this problem?  Please please please tell me it turned out OK.

  • Wow i'm suprised they wont make it less then that AND didn't tell you when you bought it! Hav eyou gotten your shoes yet? what about getting some higher heels of course ones you can walk in. otherwise sorry maybe someone else can offer advice who its happened to. Good luck!
  • I'm sure an alterations person could hem it for you.  Have them make it as short as possible and take it to your seamstress to hem.

  • My dress had to be hemmed about 4 inches. It'll be fine!
  • i chopped a good 6-8 inches off my dress. (granted it didn't have any detailing..)

what the seamstress, or at least a good one, will do is take some off the bottom of the fitted bodice and then take a little off the bottom of the skirt to keep the shape and style of the dress. don't worry, it's totally doable. :)
  • Is your hollow to hem measurement with the shoes you plan on wearing?  If not, you may only need to take off an inch or two, depending on heel height.
