Hawaii suggestions

I've always dreamed about a Hawaiian honeymoon! But I have no idea about where to start because I've never been. I'm hoping for secluded but close enough to activity to not get bored. We've been considering renting a house because we're not really big on being around a lot of people. We like the quiet but enjoy going out some. Maybe this is too far fetched but I'm hoping for a little house that's right on a gorgeous, white sandy beach with minimal rocks. Not many housesread not many people. But close enough to be able to go out for dinner and some excitement. I want to do some sight seeing and lots of beach time. I don't even know what island to shoot for...I've looked into going ther places too..maybe Mexico or the Caribbean but there seems to be more to do in Hawaii. If you have any suggestions or personal experiences I would love to hear them!

Re: Hawaii suggestions

  • I'd suggest looking on VRBO for rental houses to get an idea of what you can get for your money.  If you want 'secluded', I'd stay away from Oahu, since that's by far the most populous island.  Also, you can look, but it might be harder to come by a rental house on a sandy beach on the Big Island.  Don't get me wrong, they have beautiful beaches there and it's my favorite island, but they tend to be mostly public because most of the coastline is rocky (lava rock - one of the few places in the world you can stand on ground younger than you are).  It's still worth a look though because I absolutely love the Kona area.

Based on the preferences you'd stated, I think Maui or Kauai would be the best fit for you.  There's probably a lot of rental properties that fit your priorities, and they are both very laid back and not crowded.  For Maui, I'd suggest the Lahaina area for access to restaurants/activities.  In Kauai, depending on the time of year you go, I'd suggest either Princeville or Poipu (though it's a small island, so driving isn't that bad between areas).

Whichever island you choose, make sure you pick up the Hawaii Revealed book for that island.  It has such great info in it and is a must for Hawaii.

  • It sounds like Kauai would be the best bet for you. We stayed on the western side and it was much more quiet, laid back (the drawback is not many places for dinner). Even on the western side, you can drive to the other side of the island in an hour.

It will be VERY hard to find a house on a secluded, nice beach. Obviously if the beach is nice, they are going to build on it!

I would NOT recommend West Maui/Lahaina/Kaanapali if you are looking for an uncrowded area in Maui. That's pretty much the most populated area. If you really want to be out in the middle of nowhere, look at places around Hana.

And ditto the Revealed books-we got one for each island and they were incredibly helpful.

  • I agree with pp that Kauai would defiitely be a less busy isalnd but Maui if you stay down around Kehei. its not as crowded as Lahaina but is only about a 30 minute drive from there so when you do want to go explore there its close enough and there are a decent variety of resteraunts and beaches around Kehei also.

  • We recently stayed on Oahu on the north shore and went through vrbo.  It is a quiet area and you can easily stay on or right across from sunset beach or other white sandy beaches.  It is not commercialized yet is an easy drive to sightseeing in the Honolulu area.

  • We just booked our honeymoon in Maui.  We wanted quiet and seclusion so we booked a honeymoon cottage away from everything.  It's called Windward Garden B&B.  You can stay in the B&B, but we opted for the seperate cottage.  You may try looking into B&B type places on the islands.  They may not be right on the beach, but could provide seclusion you want.
  • we booked our honeymoon cruise, with a stateroom and private balcony (hot tub on the balcony) it leaves oahu and in 7 days is back on oahu! In between the time we'll hit up the volcano museum on the big island, kona coffee in duh, kona, and i'm gonna talk to a travel agent about kauai & maui. thats what my parents did both times they went to hawaii

I would be all about that private hot tub! What kind of things are you going to get to do while on the cruise? I mean do you have plenty of time on the islands when you stop to check it out and experience other things than what's on the ship? Cruises tend to be a little more cost effective right? I wouldn't hate that either.
  • We get 2 days on the big island (8a to 8pm) 1 day on maui and one day on kauai, our concierge will let me decide what we want to do on each island (like the volcano museum on the big island, kona on the big island) and the concierge will take care of the details like the rental car and such.
the butler will take care of everything on the boat, the only island we're not spending a lot of time on is oahu b/c its our departure/arrival spot so we'll check out oahu/ pearl harbor & haunauma bay when we get back from the cruise. shooting for a little under 2 weeks :)
I'm booking our cruise in 2014 and it's NOT really THAT cost effective b/c of the large suite we're getting, but its our HONEYMOON if there were ever a time to splurge :D

    we're booking through vacationstogo

sorry about the late reply i dont get notifications when someone replies to a post!
