Snarky Brides

My boss is funny

I work for two CPA partners--one is a woman in her mid 30's, and the other is a 74-year-old man.

He likes to come into my office and ask me tax questions. He knows I don't know the answer (up until I worked for him, I did tax law for multistate corporations), and he probably knows the answer himself, but I think it's his way of teaching me stuff without coming across as a know it all. I just play along. He does it to the younger partner, too.

I know that's random, but it's kind of quiet here so I thought I would share.

  • Me too! I wish I didn't hate accounting so much, because I seriously work with the nicest group of people. My biggest complaint is probably the receptionist's goofy forwards that I always look up on Snopes and see that they are wrong.

Oh, this morning she asked for my personal email address so she can send me funny forwards this week while I'm out of work. Oh, Vickie.
  • Aw, that's kind of sweet to me. People who aren't condescending assholes about stuff they know and you don't are rare in my experience.

My own boss related news: I got a pretty hefty raise on Friday. Out of nowhere. I've been working here since September of last year, and hadn't gotten a raise. I was getting around to asking for it soon. I'm a contract employee, so I get paid by the hour. I was going to ask for a normal raise, like another $1.50 or $2 an hour. My boss wrote my paycheck and then asked me to shut the door to the office. And then told me she'd made an executive decision that I got a raise. Another $5/hour. I was shocked.

  • Nice raise, LC!

    Here's hoping, J&K.
  • LC- that is awesome!! Congrats. I have worked at the same job for 3 years and have never gotten a raise. I want your boss! :)

  • Thanks! I'm pretty excited about it. I told my mom and she was really proud of me. Then burst my bubble by reminding me that it was probably a good idea to stick the raise amount in savings every pay period. She's right though.

  • My boss likes to come around with random sneak attacks to make sure we're actually working. Luckily I'm in the corner and she rarely waddles over so I don't get caught doing non-productive things. Oh, and she loves to tell us how much she hates our department and can't wait to move up to marketing to get away from us.

Guess what, we can't wait either. Friday can't come soon enough.
  • LC-thats awesome. I've heard my company is not doing good due to the aconomy so I dont want to ask for a raise eventhough I didn't get a raise when I hit my 3 year mark like I did when I hit 1 and 2 years. Thats ok after the wedding in september I am going to start looking for a new job.

  • That's an awesome raise! It's good to see companies who are properly managed giving props where it is due rather than bitching that "in this economy they really can't afford to increase anyone's pay...blahblahblah" and pocketing the increase in profits themselves.

Also, I would throw (even if it is just half of that $5/hour raise) into your retirement plan to beef it up a bit, especially since you're young and the market is low (relatively). The other $2.50/hour can go into beefing up your emergency savings. But that's just my two cents.

  • That's cute, Heels. Especially this time of year when there's not so much going on. He's trying to keep you sharp ;)

    Congrats on the raise, LC.
  • Does he make you sit on his lap while he asks you tax questions?

    Congrats LC!

I actually don't have a retirement fund. I need to do that. Thanks for the advice!

And actually, we're doing really well in spite of the economy. I work for a law firm that does mineral rights. Right now, we're doing a bunch of title work for an oil/natural gas company who's drilling this formation: http://dnr.louisiana.gov/haynesvilleshale/. The really cool part is that this could possibly alter how dependent we are on foreign oil, if enough people come around to the idea of natural gas as a viable energy source.

  • LC - congrats!!

goheels - I envy your helpful boss! I used to have a boss at a hotel I used to work at who was really great about showing me the ropes, and I learned so much from him. Then when I left for another hotel I was a freakin super star and really grateful that I'd had that background!

    My current boss... eh.

Weird! I think I know who you're talking about. Whitson-er-something, right? I think she's really pretty. So I'll take that as a compliment. Since I've been posting, I've gotten a lot of comments about looking like other people. It's strange! I like to think I have a lot of doppelgangers out there.

  • I think that's fantastic, LC... I bet your job is interesting! How involved do you get in lobbying for domestic energy solutions? Have you become more of an advocate?

Also- I would say definitely start socking money away for retirement. The earlier you start, the longer it's in the market and the more it is able to grow over time. Look into a Roth IRA if you don't have a retirement plan through work. You'll likely pay less taxes on your contributions now than you will later in life, as you'll likely be making a higher income closer towards retirement.
  • Oh, and yeah, I second the suggestion of a Roth IRA. FI and I are going to roll our 401k's over into one after we're married. We refer to our retirement savings as "the empire" jokingly.

  • Roth IRAs are theshit. I'm converting my traditional to a Roth this year.

That's how I talk to my clients. I call financial instruments "theshit" and "thebomb.com".

The job is certainly interesting. I don't lobby at all, except that my job is directly related to discovering and drilling for natural gas and using it as an alternative source. And just by way of the job, yes, I've become a much bigger advocate of natural gas, as opposed to oil. Although, drilling in the Gulf is a giant portion of Louisiana's economy and I shudder to think what's going to happen if the moratorium isn't lifted soon.
