Poll: Bikinis

When I lacked a computer, I came up a question to ask you girls that hasn't come up yet on this board.  When you go to the beach, how many of you feel comfortable wearing bikinis?  Or do you go for a one-piece suit instead?

The reason I ask is that my FI and I are going to Puerto Rico for the honeymoon.  I don't know how comfortable I feel wearing a bikini in public.  My FI doesn't understand how someone in her 20's wants to wear a one piece, as he's Brazilian and no one in Brazil wears a one piece.  He's understanding, but I don't want him to think I'm a prude or something on the honeymoon.  I'm feeling torn.  Has anyone gone through this?

I wear bikinis at the beach.  There are some bikini options that are a lot less skimpy than others.  I would never wear a thong bikini or a string bikini, but I wear a regular halter bikini top and for the bottoms, I usually wear boy shorts or a skirted bottom.  I feel a lot more comfortable that way.

Mine is technically two pieces, but it's full coverage, similar to some of the styles availiable here: http://www.jenclothing.com/modest-swimwear.html
I won't bear midriff or cleavage in public.  The bedroom is different from a public beach or pool, IMO.

I personally have no problem with bikinis, I've been known to don a few in my day, lol. I have no problem with them - if you feel uncomfortable because of modesty issues, I would seek out a cute one piece from jcrew or something.

I don't feel comfortable in one-pieces* for modesty reasons (nor do i think I'd look particularly attractive in one either).  I saw a cute 1-shoulder one-piece in the Jcrew catalog today, definitely doesn't look old or matronly, I also think retro one-pieces are cute because the fact that they're one pieces is a fashion statement.

    *Edit: I mean bikinis

Modesty problems in one pieces? Interesting.

I don't wear bikini's. My beachwear is much like Emily's (she posted a picture a few threads back).

Honestly, I think it just matters what YOU are comfortable with. If you are uncomfortable in a two piece or a bikini, then don't wear one. I haven't had a problem wearing one, but would never tell someone else that they should just because of their age/body/whatever. Be comfortable, :)

I love bikinis and two pieces and i used to wear them but then God convicted me when I started dating FI and I really changed what I would wear. I always wear shorts with my swimsuit and sometimes I put a swim t shirt over my suit as well. The t shirt is a sportswear one from Kohls so it feels like swimsuit material. I have a bikini I can't wait to wear on the honeymoon :) Also here's something like extreme modest: google Wholesome Wear and it's the most modest swimwear I have seen. The family (girls) from 19 kids and counting tv show wear it. '

actually here's a link right here

It depends. If it's just me, FI, friends, or my mom or something (yknow someone close to me) where I feel comfortable, I'll wear a bikini

But around my 4 y/o niece, or my uptight aunt, or when I feel it's more appropriate, I have this great retro looking one piece

Thanks for the advice.  Lovestoshopforshoes, thanks for all those links!  It's definitely nice to see some modest options out there!  I didn't even know such designs exist.  I think I may try some of those styles and see how I feel!

Ok first off I'm not quite as conservative as some of you, I'd just like to put that out first.

I wear bikinis. After working two summers at a public pool my view is "if they can wear them so can I" Meaning that if the not so skinny (sorry if I offend anyone) girls can wear tiny swimsuits with all their fat hanging out, then me, who has a nice figure, can wear one.

However, I'm not going to wear a bikini around certain people just out of respect, but on my honeymoon I will be wearing one!

I wear them.  Now, if the pastor is coming over to our house (he's friends with my family) and I'm out on the deck sun tanning, I will put shorts on.  Respect and all that.

I heart monokinis though and totally want a rockin' one for the honeymoon.  But I will also wear my bikinis.  I wear a one piece when I'm swimming for exercise.

I only wear bikinis for several reasons.. I'm comfortable in them, I love to lay out on the beach and I don't want my whole mid section to be a lot whiter than the rest of my body, and I don't want to stand out as being the only one under the age of 60 in a one piece. When everyone else at the beach or pool is wearing a two piece, people aren't like "Oh wow look a stomach!"

As pp mentioned I'm not as conservative as some of you ladies, as I've noticed from posting on this board. I live in FL and live in halter tops, skirts, sundresses, and of course bikinis when I'm not at work. It's just too hot to try and cover up unecessarily in my opinion. I never dress inappropriately or too revealing, but to me being comfortable is wearing something where I feel cool enough and not sweating because I'm wearing sleeves or something.

My honeymoon was the first time I had ever worn a bikini, for two reasons. One, I found a swimsuit shop that makes swimwear for women with real figures. So I was able to find a top that actually gave me full support. :D Two, thanks in large part to DH, for the first time in my life I felt comfortable with my own body, and I wanted to try a bikini just because I could. ;)

My bikinis (I bought two tops) cover me decently, and I also wore cover-ups over them when walking around our cruise ship and such in the Bahamas.

I wouldn't wear a bikini just because I wouldn't look good in one.  If I had the body type for it, I might consider it but I also feel that I'm a little old for wearing a bikini.

Oh - and sorry to hear about your computer issue.  How frustrating!  Glad it didn't chase you away though!

I love my bikinis.  Mine are on the more modest side - I love boy-short bottoms!  I have to be sure that tops will stay on.  I'm small, so I don't have to worry about popping out, but I won't wear anything that could be knocked out of place by a wave.

When I'm not in the water, I cover my legs with a towel and put on a shirt or dress unless it's too hot.  That is more about sunburn avoidance than modesty though....

I wear bikinis the majority of the time. The only time I don't is when I'm swimming with my parents and siblings, because my parents don't want their little girls wearing bikinis

I gravitate toward tankinis - two pieces for comfort (1 piece suits tend to ride up or do funny things to my top side), and the skirt or short kind helps me feel a bit more comfortable because I'm not excited about my stomach and upper thighs.  My gravitation to 2 piece covered suits is more because of comfort and body issues rather than modesty.

When I went on the mission trip to haiti, we were advised to bring one-piece suits because down there, seeing the midriff is a VERY "sexy" thing and especially on an American.  Weird, I know, considering what our beaches look like up here.  I bought a one piece that had lower sides so that I felt more covered on my legs.

With FI now, I wear the tankini more than anything else.  He wants me to venture out a bit, and since our HM is a private cabin with its own jacuzzi in the mountains, I guess I could try a bikini for him.  I wouldn't wear that out in public though, seriously, because my boobage is just too much and most bathing suits don't cover adequately anyway.

    Ah, dissertation done.  :-)

I like bikinis, on days when I'm feeling not fat.  This is not very often.

For fat-feeling reasons more than modesty reasons I choose to generally wear a one-piece.  But when i do wear a bikini, it covers all of my areas - no strings or tiny triangle tops for me, mostly because I don't want to fall out of it.

I wear bikinis, mainly because, as a PP said, I don't want a super white belly and tan legs and arms and also because I don't want to be the only one my age in a one-piece. However, there are some really cute and trendy one-pieces out there! I have one that I bought to work at a summer camp when we went swimming that is one piece, but it looks like a 2 piece from the back. It covers the belly and everything in the front, but is open in the back. This might be a happy medium kind of option. As other girls said, it's all what YOU feel comfortable in.

I wear bikinis - although I do have fat days and I feel like I have huge thighs (even though I don't).  I bought a tankini last summer and FI was upset - so I promised for the HM I'd get one.  I do love some one pieces severely.  :P

If I was happy with my body (primarily my mid-section) I'd wear a bikini.  Right now I just have a couple tankini's.  Obviously I wouldn't wear a bikini around anyone, but I hope to be in shape enough to bring a bikini on our honeymoon in June!
