My worst fear coming true

For the past 5 years or so I have worried about having fertility problems when the time came to start trying. It's been an overwhelming fear of mine since I do not have regular menstrual cycles (I get long ones and sometimes they last three weeks-over a month at a time). Well, I've been having issues with my cycle and I went to the OBGYN and was sent to get blood work and I was told I have a hormone imbalance and I should see a fertility specialist. NO!!!!!!!!!! This isn't good. I'm so upset, but I'm trying not to worry too much about it since hubby and I are not even actively trying at the moment, but we will soon. I also got a pelvic ultrasound so I'm waiting the results of that as well. Hopefully that will come up normal. Oh and my doctor recommended a DNC procedure. Have any of you had this done? If so, what was it like? I'm so pissed that I have to deal with all this. My bad luck strikes once again.

Re: My worst fear coming true

  • I completely understand your fear because I have the same one. My gyn is also an infertility specialist but that was more to reassure me than because I needed the specialist part. I had a LEEP done several years ago and always keep that in the back of my mind, it could lead to complications of my cervix staying closed when I am pregnant.

Try not to freak out right now, you're ahead of the game! You're going to figure out what is going on BEFORE you try to have a family. I think you're saving yourself alot of stress by doing this.

Do you know why your doctor recommended a d&c? Those are typically done when your uterus needs to be cleaned out (for lack of better wording).

Deep breaths Tara! Everything will be okay!

  • I am so sorry sweetie.  Think of it this way, you are seeing a specialist to actively prepare to have a good home for the baby for 9 months.  If you had issues and were trying and something happened where you lost the baby, that would be horrible.  Now you are just preventing that. :)

    Keep us updated sweetie.
  • Joy has similar concerns because of her irregular cycle, but we're a year from even trying.  We were planning an appointment though just for her annual physical and to make sure everything is ok.
  • Thanks guys. Found out today that my ultrasound came back saying that I have nothing wrong or in my uterus. So no fibros or cysts. It did show heaving bleeding but that's because my period was very heavy that day. My doctor did say it shows I have PCOS (polysystic ovarian syndrome) and she is referring me to a fertility specialist. I'm so confused. I don't know why she is diagnosing me with this when basically everything came out good. Also she is not recommending the DNC afterall.

However, I was told that insurance will not cover a specialist and I'm not sure we can afford it right now. I'm going to call them to find out their prices I guess. Or maybe I will consult a new OBGYN. I found out that the one I have been going to is only a mid-wife, so in my opinion she has no right saying I have PCOS in the first place.

  • I could check out the getting pregnant board on TK... I lurk and never post. but most of those ladies have PCOS.
  • Thanks Jen. I really don't think I have PCOS because I really don't have the symptoms for it.
I called my doctor back and left a message. Her assistant called me back. I asked what the real reason I'm being told I have PCOS. She said it's only a possibility at this point, not a definite. She also said it's not an emergency to go to the specialist. She said the ultrasound did show I have follicles on my ovaries.  I have no clue what that means and I just tried google searching it but didn't get a clear answer.

I wish I could just go to the specialist and ask a doctor there all the questions I have. Maybe I'll call on Monday and find out how much a visit will cost.

  • I'm sorry to hear about this too. The good thing is they caught it before you actually started trying. This way hopefully you will have things figured out by the time you start trying. I think it would have been so much worse if you had been trying for 6 months or more and then found out. This way you can make a game plan for dealing with it. I'll be thinking of you.

  • Thanks Megan.

Update: I talked to a friend that has PCOS and she said that if I don't have cysts I can't have PCOS. I also told her that my hormone levels were a little off from what they should be. I mentioned that I was on Progesterone in order to try to stop my peroid and she said that the blood test could have shown my levels a little off because of the Progesterone in my system. Also, my ultrasound could have shown follicles on my ovaries because I was mentrating at the time of the test.

So, I think I am going to not worry about this right now. My period has stopped (thank God) and I'm going to wait to see a fertility specialist. I figure why spend $200 or more for the visit when I'm not even 100% certain that I have problems. In a month or two I'm going to switch to a new OBGYN and get a second opinion on everything.

  • Sounds like a good plan Tara!  I am glad that you are able try to not worrk abou this for a little bit and get a second opinion!
  • I saw my general doctor today and he looked at my hormone levels and said they are in normal range and not to worry. Also he said that there is no reason to go to a fertility specialist yet. He thinks I should get a second opinion from a different Obgyn and he referred me to one.

In other news my cholesterol game down 31 points since August and I'm happy about that!

  • I really hope everything works out for you, Tara.  I have similar worries about fertility issues.  My mother has PCOS.  I saw her struggle before having my brother.  It's a very scary thought, but it sounds like your general doctor had some great news for you and good advice too.  I hope your second opinion turns out much better than the first Obgyn.

    Good Luck!!

  • I feel late to the game, but I wish you the best of luck. It really is the best thing to know about these things now, and get them taken care of early. Ditto to everyone else on the second opinion.
