Wedding Vows & Ceremony Discussions

Looking for a Children's Lit Reading

I have a nephew who will be 10 at the time of my wedding, and I'd like him to give a reading during the ceremony. I'm looking for something child-appropriate - short and fun, like a Dr. Seuss poem or an excerpt from a children's book - but I haven't found anything I like so far. My best idea is to rewrite "All I Really Need to Know I Learned in Kindergarten" to make it love/marriage specific, but if I can take something that doesn't need any reworking that would be better. Any ideas?

Before you list The Velveteen Rabbit, The Little Prince, Oh The Places You'll Go, or certain quotes from Pooh & Piglet - I've already seen these ideas, and while I love all of them, I don't like them for my wedding. I'd rather not talk about being shabby/worn out/tamed/only realizing how much you love something after you leave it; Oh The Places You'll Go reminds me of graduation, not a wedding, and it has some difficult names for a 10-year-old to pronounce in front of 150 people, and the Pooh quotes are cute and would be great printed on something, if you want them, but they're not really reading material, in my opinion. And I looked back through all my Shel Silverstein books, and didn't find anything that would work.

And yes, I have already made sure he is comfortable doing this - talked to my sister about it before I asked him, and then made sure when I asked him that he knew he could choose not to do it if he didn't want to. He's been in plays at church & school and enjoys it, and is excited about having this kind of role at the wedding.

Re: Looking for a Children's Lit Reading

  • I'm not sure if you found anything yet, but I'd love to know if you did. I'm in the exact same boat and feel the same way about the things you already mentioned. Good luck!
  • After writing this, I found something that might work. It's not from a kids book, but it's a poem that might be appropriate.

    TEDDY BEAR
    Author Unknown

    Getting married means you'll have
    Someone's hand to hold,
    Even when you're feeling sick,
    Even when you're old.

It means when you sit down to eat,
    Someone will be there,
So you won't have to tell your day
    To an empty chair.

It means that you can have some kids
Just like a mom and dad,
And play with them all afternoon,
    Except when they are bad.

It means that when you need some help,
    Someone will help out,
    Someone always near to you
So you won't have to shout.

But best of all is when it's time
To turn out all the lights:
You won't have to be alone
    Those long and scary nights.

So even though you don't have toys,
    You don't have to care:
Once you're married you can be
    Each other's teddy bear!

  • Love the "Teddy Bear" poem!  There are two charming children's books I always give at baby showers that talk about love for another.  Though obviously love of a parent for a child is intended, if I remember the words, love for a spouse isn't precluded:

    How Do I Love You
    by Marion Dane Bauer

I Love You Through and Through
    by Bernadette Rossetti Shustak

Both are short and sweet.  Best wishes!
"Do not fear, for I have redeemed you; I have called you by name; you are Mine!" (Isaiah 43:1)
