S/O Long Dresses - Are They Really So Rarely Used?

Re: S/O Long Dresses - Are They Really So Rarely Used?

  • I don't wear them, like at all.

I am petite (5'4") and rather slender, and generally look better in short dresses - otherwise I tend to get a little lost in the dress.

My wedding dress is an exception to my not-written-in-stone-but-may-as-well-be rule as generally I find wedding dresses tend to be a little more over and above what someone usually wears anyway (and I managed to balance it out by choosing something very sleek and simple).

Plus, I like my legs :)

    So, for me:
Long dress = great for my wedding dress
Short dress = for everything else

I have 2 long dress that I wear from time to time.  But we just do not have an opportunity to wear them often.  Most charity events down here are pretty casual.

I normally prefer short dresses because I have (IMO) great legs and they are always tan.

For the record I have never re-worn a BM dress regardless of length.

What differentiates an average host and a great host is anticipating unexpressed needs and wants of their guests.  Just because the want/need is not expressed, doesn't mean it wouldn't be appreciated.
  • For formal occasions, I prefer long dresses.  I don't have a lot of occasions to wear them, but I prefer them over short dresses.  Now, they're generally straight - no poufy Cinderella's-evil-step-sisters dresses for me.  But, I feel like the waist on a short dress is virtually always way too high for me (all my height is in my torso), and the bottom half of the dress just never fits right & the skirt ends up being too short.

For my BMs, I picked a color, fabric & designer & let each of the girls pick their own dress.  Two picked short dresses that they look great in, and I'm positive one will re-wear hers several times - even if she has to invent an occasion to wear it.  My sister picked a ballgown with pickups and a mini-train.  NMS, but it makes her happy.  Since she's the one wearing it - I have no issue.  I know I won't get any complaints about the dress this way.

Dresses may be easier to take in than let out, but guest lists are not. -- kate51485
  • The dress my bridesmaids wore were long and flowy.  It's something they could shorten or whatever and wear again.  My one bridesmaid goes to a lot of formal functions with her boyfriend and said she might keep it as is and wear it again.

  • My dress has a few pickups (just a few - I like the look, but this way they aren't overwhelming, which a TON would be, even on a curvy girl like me). But I would never do that to my BMs. They're getting short dresses. One of them will probably make it into something fabulous afterwards. Plus, she wears dresses all the time.

Expat, where do you wear long dresses? Work functions? Social functions? Charity events?
